NFL teams are allowed to pick their preseason opponents, and sometimes teams that have a good working relationship like to play and practice againt each other.

This can be exploited to play the real Super Bowl. It'd ideally be week 3. Belichik just has to agree to hand the trophy over if he loses.

There's literally no rules saying this can't happen since teams pick their own opponents, can start and play whatever players they want, can try as hard as they want, and the trophy belongs to the Pats now so Goodell can't withold it.

The only obstacle is getting Belichik to do it. Do you think he'd run the risk of having 5 rings instead of 6 if it meant giving the biggest middle finger in the history of sports to Roger Goodell? There's a chance.

It'd be cool in concept, but there's no way in hell Belichick would ever put up the actual trophy for the winner of a pre-season game.

And Payton doesn't even play the starters enough in the pre-season "dress rehearsal" that is the third pre-season game, which I think is part of the reason we started off slow the past five years or so. I don't remember the starters not playing well into the third quarter from 2006 - 2013 or so. I understand not wanting to risk injury to starters but while they may be in the groove in practice where the hits aren't real, when REAL game time comes in week one and the hits are hard and everyone's moving full speed and giving 110%, it seems like the valuable 1st team reps in pre-season games would go a long way to starting the season at full speed. And we've got to be going full speed to stomp on opponents throats starting in week one, especially since it's likely going to be a Saints/Rams rematch...blowing them out to start the season would set the tone for the 2019 Saints Against the World Tour.

I mean, they may want to play a preseason game, but it won't be for any other reason that to stir the pot a bit.

Neither team's main starters would play 100%, and the play calls would be vanilla. Still, the media might eat it up as "the two teams who should have met".

Saints would blow the Rams out even harder if they win the superbowl two weeks before the game though!

Yall aren't taking into account how tight this would be. It would be very tight.

Pre-season is for evaluating players.. nothing to earn in pre-season..
