Yaaaaaay, we're 3-2.
But sorry folks... that ain't good enough. Not this year.
Yes, it's great that we have somewhat of a leg up on the Bucs due to our opening week victory over them. But if we are being honest enough with ourselves to remove our black & gold colored glasses for some serious evaluation of our team, then it's obvious that we have quite a chore ahead of us to be considered a legitimate threat to go the distance this season.
I'm not writing this to get down on my team. But I do see the handwriting on the wall. In some ways this football season really starts this Sunday when we face our division rival, the Carolina Panthers. While it's hard to get a true feel about how far along they are under their new Rhule, there's absolutely no doubt that we have to find a way to come out on top of this game in Week 7. Failure is not an option.
Watching the Bucs dismantle Aaron Rodgers and the Packers really put a whole new demand on the Saints getting some solid victories starting now! Our offense simply has to start quicker. And our defense cannot allow the Panthers to move the ball at will, or miss opportunities at getting some takeaways. We have to come out smoking in all phases of the game, put the game away early, and not be allowing Carolina to pull out a win with some last minute heroics in the waning moments of the game. But of course I am still expecting a nail-biter at best. It's just what we do now.
This Sunday will be the defining game in a group of otherwise lackluster performances by the Saints up to this point. It would be great if the Saints were able to rectify some of the obvious issues we've been facing all year during their Bye week. But that's impossible to know for sure until we watch this next contest. Like all of you I want to be confident in our team's ability to dominate a football game when they need to. Yet so far we've seen anything but dominance, except for maybe the matchup against the Lions. But we can't play Detroit every week, and we must begin to show that we can handle more than just the Bottom 10 of the league.
Playing any team in your division is never easy. In most cases it's best to just throw out the records and even the previous performances when going up against these familiar foes. But the game this Sunday is one we have to win. Like it or not the Bucs are getting better each week, and the same can be said of Carolina & Atlanta (now that the Mighty Quinn is gone). While anything is possible, it will be harder than ever for me to convince myself that we can still make a run at a title if we can't pull out a decisive win this week. Believe what you want, but I already see this as a must win game!
