How quickly we forget how poorly Ben Watson was doing last year in this offense. We complained about how we should have kept Jimmy Graham. Then after about game 6 things started to come together. All of a sudden we hads a tight end who is matching the numbers of some of the top tight ends in the league. Coby Fleener has almost everything one looks for in a tight end except for a high level of physicality. I'm really looking forward to his learning the playbook and becoming that mid-level threat that causes the Saints offense to thrive. It must be an act of congress for tight ends to unlearn their old offense and learn the Saints. If we can hold it steady until the offense truly clicks, I really believe the Brees/Fleener combo will become deadly.

The issue with Fleener has nothing to do with the playbook, or timing with Brees.

He can Drew can sleep in the same bed and it still won't fix the issues with his hands. His hands are a big problem.

That does nothing to make me feel better. If Fleener = Watson I'll be butt hurt because we are paying Fleener 7mil a year and could have had Watson for MUCH less. Were paying him to be better than Watson.

You read one thing from butt-hurt Colts fans or know nothing Saints fans and suddenly it's gospel.

Fleener had only 3 drops with 54 catches in 2015. In 2014, only 5 drops with 51 catches. In 2013, he had 2 drops and 52 catches. Those are all very good drop rates.

Watson is freaking 34 years old and is likely done now in the NFL. That's the only reason we could of gotten him cheaper. We wanted to move toward the future and you aren't getting a 700-800 yard TE (which is what we hope Fleener is) for any less then 6-7m a year. Go look at the other TE contracts.

Ben Watson most certainly did struggle with drops last year. He was top 25 in the league in drops, and was 3rd anongst tight ends. Watson had a great year, but dropped his fair share of passes.

The problem is, Watson wasn't getting paid top TE money. If Fleener was on the contract Watson was on, most wouldn't be complaining.

I'm perfectly aware of why you do it. Especially since the draft hasn't had a worthy TE in it in the last 3 years and I'm also aware of how much top TE's get.

The problem is......he isn't playing like it and needs to get it together. Quickly.

Who said anything about reading comments from Colts or Saints fans?

Screw the stats. At this point it doesn't mean jack.

The judgement i'm making is based off of what i've seen from him so far.

Fleener has great hands, just not in a saints uniform, in his second season with the colts he just dropped one ball and caught 53, so I know he can do it, but I'm not sure where his head is at.

"In second spot sophomore Colt Coby Fleener tried to lessen the loss of every-down wrecking ball Dwayne Allen with some silky work as a receiver. He dropped just the one pass in the regular season, in what was something of a breakout year for him after a disappointing rookie season. By virtue of catching more balls he just finished above Zach Miller, John Carlson and Kyle Rudolph who also only dropped one pass."

Nothing wrong with Fleener's hands, he just not comfortable in the offense yet, does not have the timing with Brees yet but it will come.

The knock on him was not necessarily a lot of drops, but drops in key situations (I think he dropped an open TD that would have given them the lead in a game and some drops on potential 1st down plays late in the game).

Well, to be fair, the first two games of his new team is a small slice of a much larger body of work. Let's give it time. Fleener clearly hasn't gotten comfortable and that's probably the main culprit for his drops. If he gets into the flow of the offense and finds his niche, he'll be fine.

He's very hesitant out his breaks and it screws up all the timing on the routes. I agree he will get more comfortable in the offense and he and Drew will be on the same page.

Fleener's thing isn't so much that he's dropping passes, but that he's not in the right spot. 9/10 if Drew just misses you, it's not because he under or over threw it, it's because you aren't in the right spot. But that will get better as the season goes on and he gets more reps.

He's had a couple hands drops. What I mean by that is he's had drops where it looks like he was uncomfortable catching it with his hands rather than his body and dropped it. That would be more concerning to me, but it's not like that's the case with every drop.

Then there's the issue that he's not Jimmy Graham or Watson, athletically. Drew threw him a couple Jimmy jump ups last week and that's just not gonna work with Fleener. So drew has to do his work as well to adjust to the type of passes Fleener is comfortable making.
