Best Free Antivirus and Firewall (1 Viewer)

Yesterday, I tried to download AVG but it conitnuously asked me for a subscription. It is supposed to be free, correct?
Don't waste your time with AVG. I fix malware-infected computers daily that were "protected" with AVG (both paid and free versions). If you want an effective free AV go with Avira, Avast, or MSE. Add MBAM and SAS as on-demand scanners/removers and turn on your Windows firewall. This plus common sense is all you need to keep your system secure.

Avast is the better choice (use to be avg). It' s been a little over a year now that they updated it to take up so little resources you'll hardly know it's there. Stellar protection as well.

Can you please tell me what these are?

i like microsoft security essentials but it seems to be a lot more pro-active than reactive for most rootkits/malware etc.

As a AVG business user here at the firm I manage, I can assure you that AVG misses alot lol.

At home, my sweet combination is Microsoft Security Essentials (free).

Also, I run a Pro version of malwarebytes for $25 http://www.malwarebytes.org/. The only problem with it is that it's almost too protective. It blocks ips and all when I try to run torrents, so I have to turn it off when I use them.

It will catch what MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) misses and vice versa.

I don't run software firewalls. I personally think they create more headaches for me. I guess if someone can get through my hardware firewall, then kudos to them lol.

This is basically what I run as well. Even the free version of Malwarebytes is great to have though.

is AVAST worth buying or just use the free version?
