Who do you think the best kick and punt returner we’ve ever had was?

We’ve had some good ones

I’ve always liked Tyrone Hughes

Mel Gray was before I was a fan

The contenders off the top of my head

Mel Gray
Tyrone Hughes
Michael “Beerman” Lewis
Reggie Bush
Darren Sproles

Did I miss any one?

John Gilliam had a nice start until they traded him to Minnesota. Kenny Burroughs comes to mind until they jettisoned him to Houston. How about Little Howie Stevens? And look at him go as Cossell would say.

My memory must be shot, but I thought that Gilliam was traded to St. Louis.

Anyway, my favorite was Beerman, but it's hard to discount any of them, especially Mel Grey, who the Saints let get away to Detroit, He was stellar.

He might have been, but he ended up on that Minnesota team that lost their first SB. He was Sammy White before Sammy White was Sammy White.
Edit: just checked, you got me on that. it looks like he played for St. Louis between New Orleans & Minnesota.

1) tie -- Mel Gray/Beerman
2) tie -- Darren Sproles/Reggie Bush
3) Ty Hughes
Hon. mention: Lance Moore

For me it comes down to either Hughes or Lewis. Gray was awesome but didn't get to stay here to really show what he could do. Mora always said that was one of his biggest regrets.

I feel like, pound for pound, despite being so lacking these past few years, the Saints have had more good to great return men most teams in the league. That's opposed to say, the secondary, which has been a weak link or the weak link for nearly the entire existence of the franchise.

I looked up Mel Gray's information and was surprised to see that he holds the records for the top three kickoff touchdown returns by age, all at age 33. Does not bode well for Marcus Sherels, who turns 32 in September.

Mel Gray looked like he was shot out of a cannon every-single-time he returned a kick or punt.. absolute fire!.. not to mention the one man I emulated & watched more film of than any other K/R specialist ever.. his inside to outside cuts were soooo sharp, he shoulda' been charged for murdering more than just a few special teams guys that "thought" they had'm..... smh..

I would say Reggie. Dude almost has 3 punt return tds in one game; that would've been a record for sure. Also had a huge punt return td in the playoffs our sb year.

The thing holding reggie back is all those returns he had where he ran 60 yards for a 6 yard gain. Not north to south guy at all
