Bills vs Saints (Week 8)

Observations:

  • Galette played his part in the fumble on the first play of the game. Lewis wanted to run to the outside but Galette was there with contain. Nice hit by Hawthorne though.

  • First 6 yard run by Pierre was zone blocked, up to the RB to find the hole.

  • On the Hughes vs Brown sack, Brown looked like he was playing for Hughes to rush outside, Hughes saw it and went inside. He may have been expecting help sooner from Grubbs inside. Grubbs chipped on DLPs man then tried to get over to help Brown, but it was too late. Hard to tell without knowing the protection call, but maybe Brown was suppose to hold him a bit longer for Grubbs to bring the help.

  • Lofton bit HARD on misdirection on Jackson 15-yard run.

  • Love the blitz call where Hawthorne got his sack. Blitz for his normal LBer position and oline didn't account for him. Hawthorne has looked good at times blitzing this season. Shameless self-promotion here, but this is the player I thought we were getting last year. Always thought he was our best non-rush LBer.

  • Blitz call. Lofton rusher from LBer depth, takes out the RB and the FB (RB got the worse of it). Harylson comes on a stunt and gets a good shot on the QB. Lewis just did his best to get rid of the ball. Lofton looked like a man on this play.

  • Vaccaro unblocked off the edge. Flies off the snap and makes a TFL.

  • Buffalo chipped Cam and Galette on a 3rd down. I'd like to see someone step up and become a sold inside rusher for us. Walker has played well in the short time he's been on the field. Needs to get healthy. Foster still learning.

  • Nice 8 yard fun by Pierre, we had a soft box on this play.

  • Still did a terrible job of blocking on a Khiry run. If he hold it, it's a first down. Drive ended up stalling on a 3rd and 1. Bills had a loaded box for the 3rd and 1.

  • Cam played upfield a bit too much on a 14 yard run by Jackson. If he stays home, it's a minimal gain.

  • Nice deep coverage by Keenan Lewis. He's had a really good year thus far. Great signing by us.

  • Cam put a sick move on the RT. Was able to keep the RT hands off of him and avoid the punch, then win inside. Sack-fumble with the fumble recovery. Doesn't get any better than that.

  • Hard to explain how good the throw Drew made to Moore on the TD was. Ball placement was spectacular. Talking about threading the needle...

  • Galette beat the RT instantly with a speed rush off the edge. Slight pressure leading to an incomplete pass.

  • Nice job by Carr to read a 3rd down screen. Forced a punt.

  • HEY, there's Robert Meachem!

  • Colston slips while he's wide open. Quiet Storm isn't looking like himself lately.

  • Beautiful pitch play to get us 12 yards. Pierre has a lot of space to work with and Brown did a great job in getting on the DB.

  • DLP with an unnecessary hold, QB already scrambling.

  • Buffalo somehow left Jimmy Graham open for a 9 yard gain.

  • Seemed like an extremely long first quarter!

  • Two bogus false start calls. Refs should be fined for that. Unacceptable.

  • VERY well played WR screen by Corey White.

  • Hicks with a very well played run down.

  • Man, Lofton bit HARD again on a read option play. This time it looked like he had his mind made up where he was going when he read it as read option. RB ran right to where he was suppose to be for a 20 yard gain. No idea what he was doing there.

  • Vaccaro is good, but I wouldn't trust any DB in the slot against Stevie Johnson. Bills TD. Tough position for the rook to be in.

  • Tough situation on the Kyle Williams sack. Grubbs blocked the LBer on the LOS, and DLP tried to slide over to Williams to pick him up. Williams was at 3-tech so for DLP to get there in time is almost impossible, especially against Williams. Its tough because if Grubbs blocks Williams, then Alonso is unblocked because he rushed the B-gap. Drew either needed a hot-read or we should have had another back in to pick up the blitzing LBer. I blame the protection call here more than the players.

  • When Galette rushes against TEs, good things happen. He absolutely crushed Thad Lewis on this sack. Bills recovered.

  • Hicks showing up again on run defense. Kept his arms extended against the RG and disengaged at the proper time to make a TFL. Textbook.

  • Man, Vaccaro is fun to watch. He blows the TE up and stops the runner for a 2 yard gain. Aggression.

  • Hawthorne crushes Lewis on a blitz. Lewis got rid of it but took a shot.

  • Nice job by Carr to fight with the TE throughout the play and force an incomplete pass for what could have been a TD.

  • Drew hits a wide open Watson for a 17 yard gain.

  • Man, Jerry Hughes whiffed really hard on the 69 yard Stills TD. Looked like he was going to rush or was playing contain until he realized that he blew his coverage. Drew made him pay big time. Touchdown. From the looks of it, the route wasn't intended for Stills to go deep, it's good to see he and Drew on the same page to the point where Stills knew to go deep once the coverage was blown and Drew looked for him there. This communication is bigger than the play itself. We stole Still where we drafted him.

  • Galette put a pass rush move on the LT during a run down. 3 yard loss on the play. Galette is eating.

  • Saints are really impressive on the last scoring drive of the first half. Killing the click and moving the ball.

  • Went for the kill to Colston on a seam route. DB barely got his hands on it before it got to Colston.

  • Not sure what Buffalo was doing against Graham on his first TD at the end of the half. Mostly uncovered and LBer expected to cover him in space. Easy pickings for Drew.

  • Another well blocked zone run. Hopefully this continues to improve throughout the season.

  • I love how we use our FB. Just enough for defense to have to account for him. Very smart by Payton.

  • Pierre hit the wrong hole on a well blocked play.

  • Rookie TE with a nice catch. Blocked initially then released into a route. 8 yard gain.

  • Brees a little inaccurate on a back shoulder throw to Meachem. So weird to see him miss those.

  • Williams absolutely destroys Grubbs for a sack. Grubbs didn't have a chance. Williams was lined up over the tackle in a loose stance, fired off the snap, ran towards Grubbs with momentum while Grubbs was sitting in his stance. Drove him straight back to Drew. Other than Carl Nicks in his prime, nice sure what many guards can do about that. Williams is an absolute beast and a big name in the NFL if he played on a better team. I remember wanting us to somehow get him. No shame in getting beat by a player this good.

  • Vaccaro lined up in the box and stops the RB for a two-yard loss.

  • Galette playing the run this game. Second or third time seeing him stand up.

  • Still having a good game. Got open on a crossing pattern for 18 yards.

  • Dareus blows Evans up off the ball, Robinson for a 2 yard gain.

  • Nice 13 yard run by Pierre. We had a soft box.

  • 2nd TD by Graham. Short route and did a nice job of getting into the end zone.

  • Nice stop against the run by Hicks. He's playing the run game well this game.

  • We caught a break with Chandler holding Galette, Greer got beat BAD. Galette is having a serious effect on this game. I'm guessing this is his best overall game of the year. Definitely against the run at least.

  • Tough 3rd down penalty on Corey White. Blitzed from the edge and wanted to get a shot on the QB. The QB may have ducked after White launched himself. At the end of the day, he has to control himself in that situation and know the QB will get rid of the ball quickly.

  • Another 3rd down roughing penalty by White. Just a BAD mental error. He launched himself with his shoulder at the QB. Gonna get that called everytime.

  • Hicks playing the run again. Stood the offensive lineman up at the LOS and stopped a score.

  • Refs missed one bad with a hold downfield on Meachem. Not sure how they missed that one.

  • Impressive catch by the rookie TE Hill. Used his body to block out the DB for a 9 yard catch. I hope he builds on this game.

  • Can't block Mario Williams with TEs and FBs. Watson chipped and Collins didn't seal the deal. Tough assignment regardless.

  • Hicks in the run game again.

  • Wow. Dawson put a ridiculous bull rush on the LT. That was impressive. I think that's the second time I saw him get pressure this game. I had to check to see who #55 was.

  • Keenan Lewis had good coverage but Thad Lewis gave him a gift on that INT. Maybe he and the WR were on a different page but that's just a bad INT.

  • Man, Kenny Stills is special. Kept trying to get open after the play broke down. Saw Drew was going to go to him, boxed out the DB and made a beautiful catch. Touchdown.

  • Also, great job by Drew on that play. The entire oline seemed like it wanted to give pressure on that play, Drew escaped and made a great throw on the run. This is the difference between having an elite QB and not having one.

  • Vaccaro is a violent football player.

  • Dawson with a nice hit on the QB as a free blitzer. Greer drops an easy INT. Jabari is struggled as of late.

  • Stevie Johnson is a top WR in the NFL if he had any type of QB. Wouldn't mind seeing him in our offense.

  • Greer player Johnson VERY well on an inside route. Impressive.

  • Foster with a freebie sack, but look at the speed he displayed when he got off the line. He pretty much beat everyone off the line (offense and defense). Impressive, too bad he was double teamed; probably would have won if it was a one-on-one battle. Not uncommon for him to see a double team though.

  • Would have liked to see Harylson get a pick on that tip he had. He's been a good player for us. Great pickup by Loomis.

  • Another catch by Ben Watson. He played a good game, hopefully he builds on this.

  • Game over.
