I was having a conversation about the 2 formats and an interesting point was brought up.

in terms of which format will "win" i've heard only 3 main arguments

1. if there are exclusive movie deals. if the star wars and/or lord of the rings trilogies only appear on one format that would a huge boost

2. whoever wins the xbox, ps3 battle

3. price and quality of players & movies

the interesting point was

3. whichever format porn chooses

my friend says that it's happened before. that porn picking VHS was a huge reason why it beat Beta. when the internet was first going mainstream it seemed like it was 80% porn.

i'd never heard the argument before has anyone else?

I think Disney going with Blu Ray is a huge blow to HD DVD. But I personally prefer HD DVD. I won't be jumping in for at least a year to see the direction it's headed in, but I'm hoping that HD DVD manages to take the lead because the HD DVD add-on for my Xbox 360 would affordable and is extremely high-quality.

The front page of avsforum.com has two articles discussing this.

Today LG will officially announce its player to be sold in the first quarter of this year.

Another company has developed a disc that works for HD DVD and Blu-Ray.

I too will wait for shakedown unless of course LG comes out with dual format, I have the LG with all the formats already, That is why I am high on LG. My use for the higher densities is strictly for archiving and backing up hmm that 10 gig file of my son's army award ceremonies would fit without severe editing!!!!

Also, repeat after me any encryption scheme will eventually be broken until the music and movie industries charge reasonabe prices for their products. did you know their is a fee attached to every blank cd sold going to riaa and ascap and they want more! that fee is probably on ld dvd's too

We don't know about the price of the LG player yet.

In order for the player to sell it must be under $1500.

Otherwise you would just buy one player of each.

Samsung blu-ray sells for $699.00 @ best buy. I've got the xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on, and I think it's great. The main selling point for HD-DVD is better compression technology. HD-DVD uses mpg-4 compression while blu-ray is still using mpg-2. What does all this mean? Quality. Mpg-4 looks a lot better than it's older sibling mpg-2. Sony is having a hard time bringing down the cost of blu-ray an is loosing a lot of money with it's PS3 system. Another aspect people aren't talking about is name recognition; People assioate great picture with HD. People know what DVD is as well. Not everyone is a tech nerd that will know that blu-ray is named for the blue laser. However, they will know that HD-DVD is just a DVD is a great picture.

While a slight thread jack porn will be one of the first users of providing more features available because of the new capacities and the such. Just look at porn DVDs were the first to have the multiple camera angle options for the same scene.

Read today that the MSRP of the LG combination player will be $1199.00 and will ship by the end of the month.

as far as sony loosing money on selling ps3's.

every video game company looses money on the system cost at least for the first couple of years. Video game companies make their money @ the beginning of a systems life cycle on the games (both first party and third party(the system maufactuer takes a cut from each game)). So, sony loosing money on PS3's is not a big deal, they were expecting it and will continue to take a hit until the cost of the components has gone down.
