My daughter is in 5th grade. This may be the last year she does this, so I am making sure I get home in time.

Sandman, one of the most poignant moments in a father's life comes when he gets everything ready to do an annual ritual like Halloween, only to hear, "Oh, sorry, Dad, I'm going out with my friends."

You just kinda sit there and watch her go out the door, climb into a car with a bunch of laughing teenagers and drive off. It's a melancholy moment.

Then you shout, "Free at last! Honey! Get your steppin' out shoes on, we goin' to the waterin' hole for a Halloween shindig!" :)

Give them some extra homework. That's what my professors always did...cancel class with a note on the door with an assignment of things to do before next class.

To make things even, cancel Thursday's class, too.
