Breaking News: LSU to hire Stanford's Men's Basketball Coach (1 Viewer)

Good hire for LSU in my opinion. I'm not sure LSU will ever be a team that competes yearly for the NCAA title, but Johnson will certainly bring consistency that has been lacking in Baton Rouge.

Looks like LSSpam called it correctly in another thread at 10:45 this morning.

Trent Johnson, BBall coach from Stanford

LSU reaches deal with Stanford coach Johnson

By Gary Parrish

Stanford coach Trent Johnson has reached a deal in principle to become the next head coach at LSU, a source told CBSSports.com on Wednesday morning.

An official announcement is expected in the next 24 hours.

Johnson will take over at LSU after four seasons at Stanford. He's coming off a Sweet 16, but is leaving at a good time considering he is set to lose the Lopez Twins. Plus, Johnson only had one year remaining on his contract at Stanford, where he led the Cardinal to three NCAA tournament appearances.

anyone jumping up and down over this hiring?

not me. not saying he is a bad coach just not the type I think we need to take the BB program to the next level.

I think he's absolutely a great hire for LSU, and it shows that the program is still capable of attracting a very solid head coach. I mean, compare this to ten years ago when LSU hired Brady from Samford. I think Johnson, while not a top name, is certainly not an unknown and commands a lot of respect out West. Very, very good hire.

I wonder if Stanford would have rehired Montgomery if they knew this was happening?

I don't know, but you can find lots of Stanford fans moaning about the timing of this--clearly more are upset about Montgomery going to Cal than about Johnson leaving (which is perceived as more or less inevitable).

I don't know why not. The girls do and the state certainly produces the caliber talent that can lead teams to the Final Four on a consistent basis. Brady was a good recruiter and a good enough motivator, but a horrible coach and he managed to get LSU to a Final Four.

If Johnson can lock up the state talent in basketball like Saban did and miles has continued for football, then LSU's men's team will be a perennial contender just like Kentucky and Florida.

Johnson is an emotional guy and he has shown that while he is capable of attracting talent (in an environment that is not really ideal for recruiting/coaching basketball) he can win with less than the most talented players at Nevada and Stanford. I see him as a West Coast version of Anthony Grant.

There's a difference in being able to reach final fours, and being a favorite to reach final fours every season (think UNC, Kansas, UCLA, Duke, etc). Sure each team goes through ebbs and flows, even those mentioned, but you can count on those teams year in and year out to be in the Top 5-10 teams no matter what. LSU basketball, IMHO, would need at least a 10-15 year run to get to that sort of level where they can hand pick any recruit they want like those schools. Let's face it, the south has been and always will be a football region.

You mention Florida and Kentucky, and for all their accomplishments (referring to UF) they are still not a basketball school. Can LSU repeat what Florida has done? Possibly, but even then that doesn't mean they are competing yearly for the national title. It simply means they had an above average spike. That's not to diminish anything Florida did, because I think any fan would take those two years in a heartbeat. But they've only made the sweet 16 or better 6 times in the last 2 decades. If you consider that a perennial contender, then I concede that LSU can be just that.

To be Kentucky though, a team that despite recent slumps has made the Elite 8 11 times in 22 years...yeah, I don't see that. Sorry.

Let's not get into women's basketball, it's a completely different game dominated by a select few teams and the parity level doesn't come close to comparing to anything in the men's realm. It's much easier to build on a spike in performance in the women's game, and much easier to build a sustainable program than in the men's game.

LOL! If the next level is winning with consistency then he is a good hire. He has a great track record and if he can do half of what he did at nevada and stanford then I think it can be a great hire.

Who out there is a person you think could take LSU to the next level?
