Brees Injury Diagnosis MERGED (UPDATE: Drew expected to have surgery on torn ligament - out 6 weeks) (1 Viewer)

I don't get the second opinion part, obviously it's a serious injury so do your due diligence, but if something is torn it needs to be corrected asap. I don't think this is something he can get by and wait until the off season with pain management.

Well, you are correct and here's where it gets scary for Saints fans...

Why would you get a second opinion, typically? Well, typically it's when the first opinion is "unsatisfactory" and you are holding out hope that there is a more favorable view or approach to your injury/illness.

So the optimist might say "Drew is doing due diligence before he commits to being out 6 weeks with surgery" where the pessimist might think "Drew heard he's done for the year and is looking for a possible alternative that allows his to, in some way, salvage the season".

I'm deeply concerned by this.

I would be surprised if Drew did not get a second opinion. It is his body and this decision needs to be made after getting all the info and recommendations he can. This will be done quickly, if not already done, and Drew will make the correct decision for himself and his overall long term recovery. My guess also is that they still need to get the swelling down as with most surgeries of this nature before cutting him.

Seems to me if we already have the six-week figure from Schefter - that was probably the first opinion.

Drew (being Drew) doesn't want to miss six weeks. Hence the second opinion. I could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me.

2nd opinions are standard in sports but I I feel like maybe the 1st one had a more serious diagnosis. This speculation is killing me

True that.

I had a foot injury, had a stellar Ortho doc, & it was recommended that I wear one of those $600.00 ortho boots. I said, “I don’t want to wear one of those boots like Tom Brady had to wear.”
And the Ortho doc said, “Who is Tom Brady?”

Orthopods tend to be a little more sporty than the average doc, too. If you hang around a med school, you might find more than a few people who are more aware of Magnus' career than Brady's.

possibly -- but was Schefter's report ever confirmed by anyone associated with the Saints? Not saying Schefter isn't typically solid, but we didn't hear anything on this from Saints camp aside from Drew saying he was seeing a hand specialist. The actual findings of that meeting haven't been revealed by Brees or Saints staff. All we've heard directly from the Saints is Drew saying he planned to see a specialist and now Payton saying "He got an opinion and is now getting another one."

I do see it from your perspective that missing six games and getting cut open isn't something Drew is thrilled about -- but I still have growing concerns that the 6-8 week timetable the media has been running with was not directly from the hand doctor Drew saw or from Drew himself or Saints staff. It's possible that he was told the injury is severe enough to sideline him the entire year.

This is exactly what it is. He hasn't gotten the second opinion yet so that means that the first one says he'll miss 6 weeks. The 2nd one would hopefully say not as long. I'm not concerned about a second opinion at all. If anything it could lead to less than 6 weeks but from what I've read 6 seems to be the number.

No one wants to go under the knife unless its 100% absolutely necessary. So many things can go wrong in even the most routine surgery. I can't blame Brees for getting a 2nd or even a 3rd opinion.

I believe this Dr. is pioneering a new procedure for this type of injury where he reinforces the ligament with some type of "tape". (not really tape as we know it but rather a strong material),
He anchors this "tape" over the ligament. Cuts recovery time significantly. So far, it has very promising results. I believe Mike Trout had this same procedure done in 2017.
Yes, but is THAT procedure performed laparoscopically? I am assuming the tape goes under the skin -- so do they need to split open his thumb like a banana peel to get the tape in place? Someone else posted earlier (a med school student IIRC) that whatever was done, it would be done with as small an incision as possible.

Let's start an auction for an able bodied hand.

I'm out, because my hands are trashed. But I'll throw 5 bucks to someone js

No one is talking about how important the thumb is to the pass. I mean drew brees is past his physical prime. His arm is limited in power, so he needs all the grip he can to chuck the ball as far as he can. I just think his season is done. It's very optimistic to expect him to be drew brees in six weeks. I'm thinking he's not healed until next year. Of course after six weeks, if they let him play, I'd rather seem him with 4 good fingers than a fully healthy Bridgewater.

Just read an article where a doctor gave his opinion on this sort of injury. He said that if anyone can come back from this injury in record time, it's Brees. The thing that concerned me, though, is that he also mentioned how even taking a snap from the center can aggravate the injury if not fully healed.

So while I'm hopeful Brees can make a return "sooner rather than later", as Payton states, there is the worry of re-aggravating the injury if trying to rush back too soon. Also, there's no telling how rusty he might be if he has to go 5 or 6 weeks without even throwing a football. I guess we have to remain hopeful, but just a word of caution for everyone.

I'm willing to bet manning or Favre can still sling knockouts even after years of inaction.

Brees will get his reps in his sleep and not miss a single beat. #drewdat
