Brees > Rodgers Stats (1 Viewer)

Aaron Rodgers is a great QB. There's no denying it. The thing that jumps out at me when I look at his stats are his low Int numbers. He takes care of the football. It's incredible to see a QB with 500-600 attempts finishing with single digit Ints. If he doesn't like what he sees downfield he's going to throw it away instead of trying to make something happen and turn the ball over.

For most of his career Drew Brees hasn't had that luxury. Most years he's been forced to try to make plays because the defense was mediocre at best and historically bad at worst. Of all the incredible things Brees has done, including the records and mind boggling stats, what impressed me most was seeing him drag those terrible defenses to 7 wins.

Watching Brees will some of those teams to 7 wins was remarkable. I don't think people understand what a herculean feat that was. Just go look at the defensive numbers from '12, '14, '15, and '16. All of those defenses gave up over 400 points and 6,000 yards. It would be hard to overstate just how bad those defenses were but somehow the Saints still reached 7 wins.

Since Aaron Rodgers became the starter, Green Bay has only given up over 6,000 yards once ('11). They have given up 400 points twice ('13 & '18). But they have never given up 6k yards and 400 points in the same season.

Last year the Bengals gave up 420 points and 6,299 yards. They went 2-14.

The 2012 New Orleans Saints gave up 454 points and 7,042 yards. They went 7-9.

I posted this on another thread on the all decade team that directly compares Brees and Rodgers and the Saints and the Packers from 2010 to 2019 seasons

The question is how you rank Aaron Rodgers over Brees for the seasons of 2010 to 2019.

Aaron Rodgers Stats 2010 to 2019 (only played 7 games in 2017 and 9 games in 2013)

In every stat other than rushing yards and interceptions Brees out performs Rodgers.

If you look at team success Rodgers has the edge especially given Green Bay's worse years 2013 and 2017 Rodgers was hurt. Brees has four 7 and 9 seasons with no playoffs while Green Bay only has two non playoff seasons plus Rodgers Superbowl season.
I can see based on this why the voters went with Rodgers. However in that time the NFC South has been until recently a much tougher division with the Panthers and the Falcons both going to the Superbowl during this time. No team from the North other than the Packers has sniffed the Superbowl. Although as we know the Vikings have had our number in the playoffs twice.

Brees has had 40+ "game winning" drives when the D gave up scores to pull out a loss.
He has 2x as many games of that type than any other QB!
I saw a better stat that mentioned how many losses Brees has taken where he went ahead in the last two minutes and still lost.

Only Phillip Rivers has more losses in that situation than Brees.

Wouldn't that be more on the defense?

If he doesn't like what he sees downfield he's going to take the sack to protect his QB rating instead of trying to make something happen and turn the ball over.
Fixed it for ya. :9:

I'd have to do a search, but it was outlined in an article last year.

I believe Brees would have gotten the votes had the Saints gone to the Superbowl two years ago. The blown call against the Rams hurt both Brees and Payton's legacy in that detractors will say they only went to one Super Bowl. If Brees and Rogers were the same age, I would take Brees. Rogers likes to improvise to make plays happen. Brees is like a surgeon before the snap, and then executes the play. It has been fun to watch Brees play QB.

Brees is better than Rodgers at being the underdog and playing above what he's expected to. Aaron doesn't work hard enough and he cries a lot.

How is this for a QB Season:

68.4% Completion, 4544 yards, 45 TDs, 9 INTs, Rating of 116.2

That's the pass defense of the 2015 Saints.

Overall, they were worst in yards per play for both pass and run. Often "worst" means there are a few teams at the bottom who are close, but the 2015 Saints were a statistical outlier giving up 6.6 yards per play while the next four teams were about 6.0-6.1. The league average was 5.5.

The reason the media, and those who don't really pay attention to actual football, love Rodgers is his glistening INT%. Brees has thrown nearly twice as many INTs as Rodgers since 08. Why? Watch Rodgers actually play football and quit looking at stats. Brees, sometimes to a fault, will try to throw a ball into a window he shouldn't. He tries to make plays. Doesn't care about his stats. Rodgers will not take chances outside of absolute crunch time. He will take a sack, 150 more times than Brees, or he will throw the ball 10 yards deep into the sideline.

Brees throws more INT, because he is trying to make plays AND his comp % is still 5% higher than Rodgers.

Correct.

It has ruined his legacy. Especially in the playoffs.
If defense doesn't 100% win championships, it's almost impossible to win them with defenses as bad as we had in Brees' prime years. And since we've got better overall on defense, still key defensive breakdowns at key moments have payed a huge role in playoff exits.
