Owners OK changes, but re-seeding flops

Jimmy Smith / New Orleans Times-Picayune

PALM BEACH, FLA. -- NFL owners voted to adopt several rules changes Wednesday at their annual meetings, but an idea floated by the league's competition committee to re-seed the postseason playoffs fizzled before it came up for a vote.

Owners eliminated the force-out rule on sideline pass plays (receivers must get both feet inbounds unless they are carried out of bounds by a defender), and they also did away with the 5-yard face mask penalty (maintaining the 15-yard call for any face mask infraction). They added the option for winners of the coin toss to defer their choice to the second half, and field goals and extra-point attempts will be subject to instant-replay review. Full Story – Picayune
