Wow - I get it. It's your life's work, but I think this is an example where cloud-based backup is critical!

Apparently he was successful in retrieving it!

Gideon Hodge, 35, describes himself as a playwright, novelist and actor. When his fiancé told him that their apartment was on fire, he left his Mid-City workplace and rushed to the scene.

Hodge then rushed into the structure – past firefighters yelling at him to stop, past the smoke flying everywhere – to grab the laptop he knew was underneath a table inside. He had two completed novels on the computer that he wasn’t willing to sacrifice, he said.

“Anybody that’s ever created art, there’s no replacing that,” Hodge said. “It’s got pretty much my life’s work.”

Hodge said he did not hesitate before dashing in.

“Despite my better sense, I just ran inside and grabbed it,” he said. “I didn’t think to be scared.”

So I lived in Broadmoor in the 3200 block of Nashville for four years in the late 90s.

One evening, I was standing in my kitchen with my roommate and I saw a distinct orange glow coming from outside. I looked out the window and saw our neighbor's garage engulfed in flames. We ran outside to see our neighbors (a very friendly and thoroughly interesting gay couple) in complete trauma trying to figure out what to do. I asked if the fire department was coming and they said yes.

Not knowing what else to do, I grabbed our garden hose and just started spraying all around the area in front of the garage and on the side of our garage (the properties in that area are typically tight, with little driveways and old one-car garages right next to each other). At one point, I climbed to the roof of my garage to spray water. I knew I couldn't put the fire out, obviously, but I thought if i just wet everything down, it might help stop the spreading. This is probably all just silly but you want to try to do whatever you can in the moment. My roommate didn't do **** but stand there.

In what couldn't have been more than about four or five minutes, the fire truck was there and those guys were awesome. They had the thing under control in a few minutes and we were are really thankful for them and how quickly they got there.

About a month before the fire, our neighbors had put in this little lap pool in their backyard - it was basically a big bathtub that you could swim against the motorized current. Well, apparently the pump just melted down in their garage and burnt from there.

In Broadmoor, it would be more like:

Man: Beth - where's my laptop?
Woman: Behind your bong!
