"The Pentagon plans to shoot down a disabled 5,000-pound spy satellite before it enters the atmosphere in early March, a senior Pentagon official said Thursday."

How many people see this ending badly? I'm imagining the scene from Ratatouille where the Grandmother is trying to shoot a rat and ends up shooting up her entire house.

"Sorry Canada, we were aiming for the satellite and ended up destroying Toronto. Whoops....":covri:

You would think it would have had an auto self-destruct mechanism built into it.

yeah, cause everybody knows how stooopid the military is.

This post was only sarcasm.

If war breaks out and a country's satellites are shot down, it would render most of their advanced weapons useless (GPS guided missiles and whatnot). If you recall, a little while back China launched a missile into space and successfully destroyed one of its own satellites. That action had profound military implications, I was wondering when we might respond with a test of our own.

Now we are starting wars against innocent satellites?

Its not really new. Back in the 80's the USAF used an ASAT missle launched from an F-15 to hit a satellite orbiting at 344 miles above earth. It was successful, but the program was ended in 1988.

The US Navy will use a RIM-161 Standard Missile 3 which is a part of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System launched from a Cruiser. If it works, it will be an impressive feat. The kill technology uses kinetic energy...no explosives. So I guess we wont be blowing up Toronto. Basically using a bullet to hit a bullet. Im not sure if this missile has been modded to hit it while it is in orbit, or while it is re entering the atmosphere, which is what it was designed for.

We had a 10 second window of opportunity to fire on it and we nailed it from a moving ship. This should make Russia even more upset and nervous if we put the missile shield in Bush has been talking about in Europe. That goes for China as well. Superior Technology at its best. Can you imagine what we have that is kept secret from us.
