Bucs' Kelly Plans to Test Free Agency This Spring

Brian Kelly, the Bucs' bookend cornerback who played opposite Ronde Barber for the past decade, said he plans to become a free agent according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Kelly, 32, is scheduled to earn $3.2-million in 2008. But he said he plans to "buy back" the final year of his contract by exercising a $480,000 option in March.

"Consider it done," Kelly said in a text message Saturday.

Kelly's 22 interceptions rank seventh in Bucs history, one behind John Lynch.

I like Kelly, but I think we should go after someone that is more familiar with our "man" scheme and not the cover 2.

Kelly is good, but we need youth. And Saintholic is right. No more Cover 2 guys in a man scheme, please.

Pass, youth and man cover skills aside he is no better then Drayton Florence who will come cheaper then Kelly the only reason he is opting out of his deal is so that he can get paid one last time.

cover 2 corner I think I'll pass! EX. See Jason David same scheme.

Saints Master has spoken........................................

This is a good thing for the Saints due to simple supply and demand economics. Kelly buying out his contract will mean one more CB in free-agency, which means it will be easier/cheaper for the Saints to pick up a CB. More CB available means price is lower. Teams will not be as willing to over-pay because they have the next best thing on speed-dial ready to come in for a workout.

Where do you guys get the idea that Cover 2 CB's don't have to actually cover people? Jason David wasn't bad because he was used to a Cover 2 system. He was just bad.

With that said, hes too old and the reason he opted out of his contract is so he can get one last payday before he retires.

because in cover 2 zone or tampa two the defense that both the bucs an colts employ the corners cover a particular area of the field not particular person. people get cover 2 a little mixed up "cover two" only really means covering the two deep areas of the field.

in a cover two system"tampa two" the corners dont actually have to cover people they cover the flat zone with thier eyes on the qb. the line backers cover the hook zones, and the safetys cover the two deep thirds of the field. zone corners and man corners are two differnt animals its rare to find a guy thats really good at both. we signed david because the fo thought he could play and zone equally well.
