Calcutta -> Kolkata, WTH?? (1 Viewer)

Yeah happened ages ago. Don't remember when I found out, but it had been a while ago and I was already late to learn.

They changed Peking, Bombay, Madras, and I'm sure some others too.

I'd been hearing it on NPR lately (maybe just 2-3 weeks) but it wasn't registering
Then yes I read the article and saw "formerly Calcutta"
And then shocked to see how long ago it changed

Here's hoping mother Theresa can play guard

Yeah I think Chennai and Mumbai and Bengaluru all came before Kolkata too, late 90s. Maybe some came later, dunno, but hard not to say Bombay etc. At least they didn't rename the shirts or the gins.

I'm waiting for Korea to change Seoul to Soul. They already changed Pusan to Busan. Only reason I know is cuz my wife is Korean, heh.

Blame the British for the "westernized" pronunciations and spellings.

I've always wondered by we use the British version of the names of Spain (España), Germany (Deutschland), Italy, etc. instead of just calling them what they actually named their own freaking countries.
