I've always wondered by we use the British version of the names of Spain (España), Germany (Deutschland), Italy, etc. instead of just calling them what they actually named their own freaking countries.
It works both ways. Other countries do the same. Some countries take things even further. For example, Spanish-speaking countries will actually change people's names.
