Cam Trying to Recruit DeForest Buckner? (1 Viewer)

We have the cap space to work a new deal for better cap hits than his 19.7M and 20.2M hits in the next 2 seasons if Buckner’s willing to negotiate a new deal
Sure, we can get it down to $5m in 2023, but then his cap hit would be $35m in 2024 (putting us around $100m over the cap). We would likely restructure that down to $9m and end up with $27m in dead money when he is a UFA in 2025.

The guy can play, but we might as well have gone after one of the other big names for a longer term deal instead of taking Buckner on at $20m/yr for two years (with loss of draft capital).

I haven't watched him play much in Indy but he was a force in SF.

We could structure it the same way as the 4 years in Carr’s deal. Minimal impact in the first two years at 5M and 13-20M, then it can escalate to higher caps in the extra 2 Out years in years 3 and 4. For a top 5 DT he’s worth it.

We’re restructuring to get under the cap in 2024 any way. Lattimore, Ramcyzk, and Carr restructures put us at $16 million under the cap. Buckner would restructure in ‘24 too. We begin to have a ton of cap space in 2025 that allows the restructures to absorb into the cap and still have a lot of room.

That won’t be enough to get us under. We have to sign enough players to fill out a 53 man roster, which will add another $21m to the cap. The Over the Cap numbers also assume that we let Ruiz walk, Spotrac factors in a fifth year option for him. That puts us at $331m in cap obligations going into 2024, and if Thomas doesn’t get re-signed it will be another $22m on top of that.

Solid player, steady performer, and great leader. Also like that he's been relatively durable throughout his career.

This would be a very good pickup and would really solidify our defensive line going into the draft.
I’m taking cap in other posts, but I think this probably understates what Buckner could do for us.

He’s listed as a trade target for several teams, I don’t know how realistic any of those scenarios are.
