They have no idea as to what the scheme was on a certain play or for that matter the play call.

Another thing is people on here love to quote pff when it comes to other teams players but when pff has us with a top 10 line it's a mistake.

I'll take Payton's assessment over theirs a yeah of the week.

How do you think teams grade out other teams? it's imperfect, but it's better than nothing. I wouldn't use it to over ride what coach is saying though for the reasons you stated.

No.

It might not be perfect but it's likely the best site around for grading teams performances on a game by game basis.

I treat their work as one big metric of stats.

Nothing more nothing less. Sometimes a guy gets docked for someone else's mistake. Sometimes someone else covers a guy's butt and he comes away with a positive grade.

But those things don't completely discredit PFFs ratings though. It's still unlikely for a player to have an absolutely horrible game and grade out amazingly.

Nothing is fool proof, but Pff has a great grading system. If you don't like it or don't agree with it, then that's fine too.

Once again. Why does it supposedly work for other teams but when they have saints with a top 10 Oline it's a mistake?

I am not going to tell people what to do or not do. For me personally, stats in football are meaningless, but if people like discussing stats, let them be.

I'll say:

They have no idea as to what the scheme was on a certain play or for that matter the play call.
That is true. And their system is not without flaws, but every since fantasy football and its heavy reliance on stats, stats have overtaken the eye test. There are many stories you just cannot tell with numbers.

Another thing is people on here love to quote pff when it comes to other teams players but when pff has us with a top 10 line it's a mistake.
And that is also true.

I'm just saying all grading is imperfect. People can chose to do what they want with the data, but I understand you're point. If the idea is they're a pretty good indicator, then that's fine, but if Payton says otherwise, then he's right about our team.

PFF said that fans that read PFF stats have a knowledge rate of 13.9. Don't know what that means but seems to be decent.

Grading is just one part of assessing a player. The problem is people thinking that it's the end all be all of a player assessment.

Don't see why we have to. Writers at NFL.com refer to them all he time. Along with Trip and Underhill

Good enough for them...ok enough for me...though they aren't gospel by any means.

While I agree they are only guessing as to what a player is "supposed" to do on a given play, their assessment is better than nothing, which is what the mainstream press hands us.

It's just a piece to help you solve the puzzle. Along with your personal observations, coaches analysis, talking head babble etc. It's not the end all be all ... but it helps to put together the pieces.
