Cap change that should happen (1 Viewer)

Its a decent idea but it would give the richer teams an advantage. That is what the cap is all about leveling the playing field for the not so rich teams.

My point on abuse is simple. Owners/GM's would have less incentive to pay big bucks for outside talent, when they can pay that same amount of money, but have it count less against the cap for their own stars. A team devoid of talent will still shop around, but more often, you'd see teams be more of a miser in Free Agency, except for re-signing their own guys. This would depress the overall FA market.

Also, real cash is still king. NFL owners can still only spend so much real money.

The system is fine how it is now.

Your point on abuse is flawed. Teams would not be misers in FA. To an owner, they are still spending money to sign their own draft choices. It just does not count against the cap. They would still have to meet minimum cap numbers without their own draft choices counting against that, so salaries have to go up. Furthermore you have people like Jerry Jones and others who would then spend all the way up to the cap on free agents.

Allowing players to be signed to contracts that do not count against the cap will benefit the players and increase players salaries. It will not have a chilling effect on the FA market, other than there will be less players that elect to enter free agency.

The owners of smaller market teams definitely do not want this because they will have to spend more or become less competitive.
