Cap Specialists Discussion about MT, Taysom, and AK (1 Viewer)

Not to sound like that guy who had a friend at the gym who knew everything but I have it on really good authority(member of Saints pro personnel office) who had a few too many drinks in Nashville this past offseason swore up and down the Saints would try to move AK this offseason.

Now would be the time to do it before his trade value drops off a cliff.

This is a pretty well done piece from October. He was right on the Michael Thomas prediction.
That article is why I think Saints should resign Dalton and make a move for a rookie QB within the top 10 like the Chiefs did back in 2017.

As he put this isn’t a win now team and Loomis echoed as much when he said we have some holes.

We can be “competitive” due to a weak division but signing a vet like Carr would signal a move that we can make a deep playoff run.

I don’t think so.

Reach back into the Ohio pipeline and move up for CJ Stroud. Get that cheap QB contract and take advantage of a weak division, while continuing to rebuild the cap.

I see how Carr fits logically, I also saw how going from Payton to Allen and keeping the staff made logical sense too.

Sometimes you have to get away from the obvious path

I’d highly recommend Nick’s site. He’s done a bunch of recent articles on this (plus he’s currently running a deal).

In short, it isn’t hard at all. As usual, people outside the organization (or fans who haven’t fully read and digested how the Saints operate) look at the numbers and freak out. But they don’t understand how the Saints originally structure contracts so that they can be moved later.

For these specific players, MT is gone. His cap number for 2023 has been effectively cut in half so that we can eat the other half next year.

AK will likely be here this year. Next year is iffy.

Taysom’s deal likely keeps him here this year, too. While next year is iffy, although that could change with a restructure.
