Cap Specialists Discussion about MT, Taysom, and AK (1 Viewer)

That's actually not true. Michael's contract was very cap friendly and he's averaged less than $16M/season if we don't pay out his $50M bonus. The contract was/is a steal for that caliber of player. Sucks he got injured, but any person with half a brain would've signed Mike to that contract. Also, that's the crappy part about backloading contracts and restructuring money. It doesn't leave any room for negotiating and potentially bringing the player back on a cheaper deal. Who wouldn't want Mike back next season on a cheaper deal that makes sense for 2023? Hopefully that's rhetoric but you never know around here anymore...
Yea the 31.755 million due March 17th if he’s on the roster makes it for sure he’s out, I doubt once that happens either side would be truly open to bringing him back.

Sucks that his career was derailed by injuries

I don’t know how Loomis will pull this one off. If we restructure our top three contracts to turn as much 2023 money as possible into restructuring bonuses, we save $32m against the cap but we are still $27m over the cap. If we go down the list and say let’s do the same for Kamara, still $19m over the cap. We have to get under the cap before we can designate anyone a post June 1 cut, so we’ll have to either restructure the bulk of the roster or make some tough cuts.

A few things:

1.) TH7’s contract is not team friendly for us to trade him. So, SP can kick rocks on that one.

2.) MT’s contract was restructured so it’s team friendly and player friendly. I don’t want to see him traded. I’m willing to give it one more shot with him. SP can kick rocks on that one too.

Essentially, SP can kick rocks on any player not named Peat, TQS, and Turner. Davenport is a FA, let’s see how quick he is to sign that dude.

Me.

The guy was on a HoF trajectory his first 4 seasons. I do not question that. He was a different animal from a competetive standpoint. But a 30 year old WR, who has missed 40 out of 50 games over 3 seasons is a pretty clear sign that the fork in the road has arrived. Its time for us to move on from that.

I hope he can turn his career around, but I think he needs a fresh start. I also think its time for us to move 'availability' up the priority list when retaining, signing and drafting players.

Is that what you got out of the restructure?

He will be a post june 1 release. There is very, very little chance (how close can we get to none without being none) Loomis did this to reduce his cap hit in 2023, and create a giant cap hit in 24 because of it. Getting the cap "back to the middle" was Loomis words, and anything other than releasing MT as a post june 1 release would fly in the face of that more than any other deal on the roster.,

I may be in the minority here but I don’t think Thomas is cut.

I would be shocked, he is due $50m next year if we don’t cut him before 3/17, and he’s hardly played in the last three years. 2024 would be the last year of his contract, so unless we extend a player who can’t stay on the field we’d have to figure out a way to eat $60m in dead cap between 2024 and 2025.

Moving on now with a post June 1 cut saves us $1.5m this year and costs us $14m next year, a massive savings from the $60m alternative.

Its no coincidence that Loomis restructured this deal on the last day he couldve in order to use the post June 1 designation. We will know for sure by March 17, but its inevitable at this point.

It would require a big change of heart by Michael Thomas to take either a pay cut or a subpar extension.

draft a RB with one of the first 2 picks, trade AK. hes good, but he hasnt been something thats irreplaceable the last few years.
I don't know about the cap impact, but I absolutely agree that we try to get what we can for AK. He is getting older for a RB, he is being totally misused under PC, and he will probably be missing 6 games this year. I am not sure we could get anything better than a 3rd, but that works for me! I want to mention that I really like AK and his skill set, but have no confidence that his usage in this unimaginative offense would improve where we get value from his snaps.

We save $1.6m against the cap if we trade him. His current cap hit is $16m, would have a dead cap hit of $14.4m if traded.

That is not much of a cap savings, but it would accrue us a draft choice and get him off the books in '24! Maybe worth it!!

So MT is not tradable, trading AK saves $1.6m, and trading Taysom saves $300k. We need to find $59m in savings before we can even consider trades or post June 1 cut options, and AK and Taysom offer us some of our highest potential restructure savings ($7.1m for AK, $6.8m for Hill).

Here’s my best take on finding those savings:

Restructures (cap savings)
Lattimore ($10.1m)
Jordan ($10.0m)
Ramczyk ($9.7m)
McCoy ($8.0m)
Peat ($8.0m)
Hill ($6.8m)
Maye ($4.6m)
Hurst ($3.3m)

Total savings $60.4m

Leaves the door open to trade AK if desired/possible and continue on with post June 1 cuts of Winston and Thomas. I would keep AK but avoid restructuring him if possible.

Here are the other candidates to get us meaningful cap savings through restructures:

Winston ($8.7m)
Kamara ($7.1m)
Davis ($5.9m)
Mathieu ($4.4m)
Granderson ($1.5m)
Roby ($1.4m)

Everyone else would be less than $1m in savings from restructures. It’s possible to find additional savings from extensions with or without void years, these extensions spread the money across years already on the contract (real plus void).

I'm not sure why anyone wants to trade AK or Taysom. They are our offense.
If we get rid of them we'll be putting up 6' and 9's all year
