Captain America- Brave New World- trailer (1 Viewer)

I feel this is kind of like the Dennis Allen years
The impulse is to say it didn’t work out so it was a bad idea
But it made sense at the time
The major heroes (and their specific fans) were saturated but there were plenty of threads and also the impulse to broaden fanbase and stories
Made sense but (as I see it) there were 3 main issues
- Marvel had grown a very rigid top down system that didn’t shepherd the new stories well
- a part of fanbase who resisted- in the strongest terms- any attempt to broaden and diversify the stories and characters
- Covid and it’s need for as much content as possible

Covid is a big part of this, and I think that does go overlooked. I also think that the switch to Bob Chapek as Disney CEO and the "turn the content taps on" mandate to bolster Disney Plus put pressure on Marvel to create a bunch of things they maybe otherwise wouldn't have.

It has been well documented that the last several years saw Feige spread way too thin and unable to give everything the same level of attention he had before.

But all that said, I still have one glaring issue with the last several years, and that's a complete lack of identity as to what the overall goal of this saga is.

Phases 1-3 are now collectively referred to as The Infinity Saga. Obviously not everything in them is about Thanos and the Infinity Stones, but there is a sense of everything building to that. In some movies it's just breadcrumbs or references. In others its establishing storylines for later payoff. In others it's very direct plot and character development.

Phases 4-6 are The Multiverse Saga. Phase 5 ends with Thunderbolts. At this point, entering the final act of the saga, I still have no idea what the Multiverse Saga is or what it is possibly even building to aside from some vague notion of Secret Wars tying it up and maybe acting as a soft reboot in a way. There has been very little forward momentum for the overarching MCU. The multiverse concept has mostly just been used for gimmicks and nostalgia and not as an actual plot device. At this point we know that the multiverse exists and we've gotten a bunch of cameos and returns of other iterations of characters for largely self contained stories. And that's it, basically.

I feel no sense of building to Doomsday or Secret Wars. Everything has just been so scattershot and undercooked.

After seeing reviews from critics I like, I’m going to wait for this to come out on Disney+. I was hoping BNW would be somewhat as good as Winter Soldier or Civil War but it’s lookin’ like it isn’t even close.

So far, the only super hero flicks I’m interested in is Fantastic Four and Superman. However, Thunderbolts’ trailer was good enough to put it on my radar.

Around a 70% drop in box office returns this weekend which is about as bad as it gets for blockbusters.

It will likely struggle to get to a 400 million worldwide gross. I think Thunderbolts will as well. Marvel clearly has major brand damage with general audiences.

I'll say it again: they cannot afford for Fantastic Four to be anything other than a grand slam at this point.

I really liked this one and I think those that are choosing to not see this because of reasons are doing themselves a disservice. Was it the greatest ever, no, but it is definitely the best since Endgame.

It was like if The Incredible Hulk and CA/Winter Soldier had a baby.

I was going to ask for reviews from folks here vs. critics and all the other junk. My son and I are planning to see it together this weekend.

Thank you.

It got a B- Cinemascore, which is the lowest of any Marvel movie ever. This is what i mean when I'm talking about brand damage.

For the uninitiated, Cinemascore is a polling/ market reseaech service studios use to track audience reactions to movies. They poll audiences leaving the movie and it's graded on a heavy curve since there's some portion of the audience who just gives everything a positive score.

To give some context, the worst stinker, all time terrible movies usually score in the C or C- range. Only 22 movies in the 46 year history of the service have ever actually scored an F.

Thus, B- is actually much worse than it sounds. It signals a pretty dismal audience reception. So this isn't just critics bashing a movie. Audiences have been pretty harsh on it, too. As evidenced by both the Cinemascore and huge second weekend drop.

Understood and thank you.
I am not an intelligent person, especially when it comes to movies. If something makes me say, ā€œooooohhhh, did you see that? He’s red vs. greenā€, then it’s probably a win for me. :hihi:

They also gave Thor Love and Thunder a B+ and The Dark World an A-! So... :idunno:

I not only think brand is hurting the MCU. Streaming is as well. We've already had some who stated before the first teaser released that they weren't going to see the movie and would wait until it hit Disney+. I would imagine there's five fold in the general public feeling the same way no matter how good the movie might be. And we can't dismiss those who will unfortunately hate on this particular movie for... reasons.

Yeah, for sure, the only ones I've gone to in theaters since Endgame have been Dr. Strange MOM and GOTG3. The rest I've waited for D+. I might go see Thunderbolts though.

I will say that of not for D+ I'd probably have gone to see 3 or 4 of the other MCU movies since EG.

Ya’ll keep saying reasons but they are interviewing people at the theater that wanted to see it and still didn’t like it. That’s all the ā€œreasonsā€ that I need. I get Disney + for free with my Verizon account I will watch it with the grand kids at home and save the $100 bucks at the theater.
