Picking NFL's best team? That's Big Easy

Oct. 20, 2009
By Charley Casserly
CBS Sports

Every Saturday at our production meeting for the NFL Today, we vote on the top 10 teams in the league. This week I would expect us to have our first unanimous vote in a couple of weeks and pick the Saints as the No. 1 team after their impressive win over our previous top team, the New York Giants.

The Saints have played two of the best teams in the NFL, Philadelphia (without Donavan McNabb) and the Giants (with some injuries in the secondary) and won impressively both times. New Orleans is a well-coached team on both sides of the ball and has two excellent leaders in quarterback Drew Brees and linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

Good story I didn't see posted yet. Enjoy!

On the defensive line, the Saints got a break when Charles Grant and Will Smith were not suspended. Both players were asked to lose weight to improve their speed, which would help them improve their ability to get to the QB. Smith dropped his weight from 296 to 270 and Grant went from 304 to 280.

Man 600lbs of combined beef at DE whilst on Star Caps!

Not to turn this into a Bush discussion, but I'd say Mario Williams is a highly productive player for the Texans

Fair discussion of the Saints by Casserly, but I think he somewhat underrates Colston. He did recognize Jahri Evans as being probowl caliber, but the only other O linemen he mentioned was Nicks, and only to say that we got a good deal on him in the draft. Some actual analysis of the O line's play would have been better. He also didn't mention our DTs or LBs other than Vilma. The one player of ours he has ultimate respect for is Brees. Of course, he's the key and deserves mucho respect, but I think because we play in a small market most of our players don't get much recognition, even from the experts.

I also think he underestimates Greer and Porter:

"The Saints also added cornerback Jabari Greer, who has excellent speed. Tracy Porter is healthy this year and also has very good speed. Neither of these players are elite corners, but this is the best group of corners Payton has had since he has been with the Saints."

Definition of elite:
1.
a. A group or class of persons or a member of such a group or class, enjoying superior status
b. The best or most skilled members of a group

I'd like to see a list of cornerbacks playing better. It won't be a long one
