You remember Charlie Rangel, the NY congressman who made the "Who wants to live in Mississppi" comment last week?

Don't laugh at Charlie, he's the new House Ways and Means Committee chairman...the committee that decides how the money gets spent.

Here we go. He's reviving the old notion of two years of mandatory federal service, either with the military, or as airport security, or in schools, or in a hospital.

Conscription anyone?

Rangel Will Push To Bring Back The Draft
N.Y. Dem Says U.S. Needs More Military To Face Iraq And New Challenges
November 19, 2006

CBS/AP) A senior House Democrat said Sunday he will introduce legislation to reinstate the military draft, asserting that current troop levels are insufficient to sustain possible challenges against Iran, North Korea and Iraq.

Good. He should put his name at the top of the list.

I kid since obviously the previous drafts didn't run afoul of it but it's always good for a laugh. He seemed to soften his tone in the interview -- I don't think requiring two years of federal (or state or local) government service is a bad idea in it's own right so long as it's not limited to military service.

As far as you guys saying Rangel should go, too, the story does reveal he did serve in Korea.

Oh, and it'll never pass.

I have to agree with Rangel on this point. I think if our politicians knew that they were sending children of their constituents over to fight a war, they may have second thoughts. In addition, two years of service (military or civic) would not be such a bad idea, especially if it is linked to college tuition waivers. This would help under-privaleged youth have an opportunity for higher education.

Nah, but whenever somebody mentions two years of service like this, the Soviet system is always the first thing that comes to my mind.

RIP Dr. Winters, my Russian History profesor, who always said such compulsory service was the hallmark of a totalitarian society.

I knew as soon as the Democrats got back the majority they would start pushing for the draft...they've wanted a much larger force with the War on Terror for some time. I find it interesting how so many of the younger voters are pushing for the Democrats, and their own vote is going to eventually land them in the battle. But, with that said, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the Democrats in reinstating the draft and putting this larger force to battle with the War on Terror. It's been done many times before (including Vietnam).

Rangel doesn't want a larger/stronger military...the draft is his "means" to an "end"; that being, if the neo-cons were sending their kids or their lobbyists' kids to Iraq, the war would never had happened.

Bull.

Two years compulsory federal service for everyone is an old, old Democratic agenda item and it has nothing to do with politicians having kids in Iraq.

Milton Friedman's corpse is barely cool, and the draft is up for discussion. As Borat would say, niiiiiicccccce.

Even if a draft were to pass, and the military is dead set against it, the well-connected would still find pathways to opt out. The proposal is designed to create havoc on college campuses, so there's method to Charlie's madness. It's about power, as usual.

Not just a draft, but the revived and refurbished egalitarian, socialistic concept of two years mandatory federal service either in the military, or hospitals, etc...etc...etc...

This is nothing new. In fact, it's a throwback to the 1920s and 1930s.

I thought we lived in a free country. I don't remember any poor or minority kid being forced to serve in the military. I also don't remember my cracker white middle class cousins being forced into the military which they honorably served for 6 years each of them. I don't remember a man in a Marine uniform tying and gagging my cousin to join the Marine corps, something that he loves and will do for the rest of his life. I don't rememeber Max Baucus's, Senator form Montana, trying to find a way out for his nephew who was killed in Iraq and who voluntarily served. No no no no. This is ********! The armed forces are so much stronger because they are manned by people who want to be there, and want to be there for an extended period of time. Don't screw up the best armed forces in the world because some moron wants everyone to serve their two years because they have to.
