Chauncey Gardner Johnson: CGJ and the battle of the safeties (1 Viewer)

It was a big question over the offseason, how would the Saints address a lack of safeties on the roster? Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is one answer.

One answer is apparently Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, but what’s the question? After the Saints got rid of Kurt Coleman following a less than stellar showing in 2018, there was a question of who the Saints would get to replace him on the roster. A lot of analysts and bloggers were suggesting that the team would do fine with just Vonn Bell, Marcus Williams and Chris Banjo heading into the 2019 Season.

I wasn’t buying that. It wasn’t as if that group had put together the kind of year that suggested that help wasn’t needed. According to Pro Football Focus, Vonn Bell graded out at above average with a score of 74.1. That made him the 24th ranked safety in the league last year.

At free safety, Marcus Williams was graded as above average as well with a score of 70.8 or 36th ranked safety in the NFL. Those don’t seem like numbers a team like the Saints and a coach like Sean Payton would just sit on.
