My perception of Ditka's time in NO was he exerted more effort on endorsements than on running the team. I can't recall all of his side gigs, but he lent his name to a restaurant, hawked Big Shot drinks, etc.

If memory serves Ditka and Benson had a conversation before Venturis interim was even over to get Ditkas temperature about returning. Ditka expresses interest and I don’t think anyone else was ever seriously considered.

when Ditka and Kuharik were done, Benson took a much more measured approach and hired a committee to find a GM saying he wanted it to be the last time he had to do it

Dude say what you want about Ditka, but he honestly wanted to do well here and turn us around.

I remember about a year after he was let go I got bumped up to first class on a flight to Chicago and who did I get a seat next to? Ditka. I was wearing a Saints shirt and he struck up the conversation. We talked Saints the whole flight and he bought me drinks the whole flight.

He had nothing but great things to say about the Benson family, the organization, the fans, etc. He really felt bad about how it turned out, but said he would always support us. Was happy that we had finally won a playoff game. I believe we won that playoff game with most of the players he had as well.

When we do off the plane, he shook my hand and then gave me the biggest cigar I had ever seen, lol.told me if I had time while I was in town to go to his restaurant and have a meal on him. Never got to do that because it was a short 2 day meeting.

All in all, he was a cool guy and I got respect for him.

I’m sure he is a fun guy to chat with, there is a reason he is/was on TV! However, I heard that he spent more time on the golf course than coaching!

Mike Ditka come back was a huge mistake on both him and the Saints. The game clearly passed him by when he arrived. If he hadn't came back he would look better in retrospect.

On that note with his time in Chicago if he had better QBs or offensive coaches no telling how many SBs he would of won. McMahon and Harbaugh were yuck even by that era's standards.
True, but his biggest problem was Chicago. When he came here, his heart never left that city. Every win, every accomplishment here was hollow. The losses, the wins, the criticism by the press, none of it meant anything to him.

That was the year that Benson sent applications to several candidates. One of the questions on it was “are you willing to work weekends?” Lmao.

He sent those applications to Sherman Lewis and Vic Fangio as well as a couple of other guys I think.

For me, Mike Ditka invokes similar feelings as Roger Goodell. He accomplished nothing here and spent all his time complaining about the city. That it was dirty and he didn't have anywhere to shop. He couldn't leave fast enough for me. I can't stand that jerk-faced dude.

Lol. Ditka could have stuck with Jim Everett after he had one of the best seasons statistically in Saints QB history at that time. He ran off Everett for Heath Schuler. Ryan Leaf gets all the accolades as one of the biggest bust in qb history ole Heath needs to be in that conversation. Had Ditka kept Everett around things could have been different as we actually had a solid defense in his first year with Xaven.

Forgotten about good ole heath. I think about the Billy Joe's, Delhomme, Wuerful and Kerry Collins. Guess that makes Heath a big ole forgotten bust

If memory recall, wasn't Everett in his car on the way down to NOLA when he got the message not to come???

As an organization, we have been fortunate to have pretty good to well above average QBs.
Kilmer, Manning, Stabler, Hebert, .... Blake, AB, Brees.
There are quite of few teams that cannot say this.

Anyway, Ditka is a giant gap between them. His best is McMahon, and McMahon is probably in the top 5 worse QBs to win a SB.
