on a 12 ounce can it says the serving size is 1 can.
on a 20 ounce bottle it says the serving size is 1 bottle (used to be 2.5 servings, but today i saw it now says 1 bottle).
but on a 2 liter of coke the serving size is 8 ounces...

who comes up with "serving sizes"

8oz is the standard measure for most drinks iirc...there are some exceptions...wine being one of them...I think measured at 4oz.
As for the can and bottle listing they probably don't expect a consumer to split the amount with others...I guess.

I think there was a push recently to stop listing the nutrition facts on single serve containers broken up into multiple servings because it was misleading. It really doesn't matter what you consider a serving as long as the nutrition information is accurate.

If you buy a can of coke, you're going to drink the whole thing. Same goes for a 20oz bottle. So the nutrition information on the panel should be reflective of what you're about to consume.

If you are buying a 2L its going to be broken up, so theres more leeway in how the nutrition panel can be made.

The original idea was to set a serving size at some arbitrary value like 8 oz. so you could compare different sizes of different products and get their relative nutrition. Like you said, though, it's kind of stupid because you're not going to drink 2/5 of a 20 oz. drink.

I honestly hadn't realized that they changed it until this post, because I don't really drink sugary drinks. It gets annoying with single-serving foods, too. I looked at a package of fig newtons today and the serving was "1 cookie". Servings per container: 2. Really, people? I'm gonna save the other one for later? They're dry enough when still fresh

Not long ago, can't remember what it was -- some bag of chips or something like that -- there were 1.75 servings in the container. Breathtakingly dumb.

The FDA, last year, changed it so that drinks under a certain size had to display the facts as if you were drinking the whole thing. Manufacturer still had the option of putting their arbitrary standards on their as well if they wanted too.
