In the days leading up to the NFL Draft Combine, it's hard not to think about Mike Mamula.
Thirteen years ago, Mamula became the first of what would end up being a long line of noted "combine freaks" to take NFL scouts and player personnel men by storm during the annual February post-Super Bowl treat for the football-obsessed.
Back in February of '95, Mamula showed up to the combine considered a potential second- or third-round draft pick. An undersized defensive lineman while at Boston College, the kid from western New York was hardly considered a future NFL pass rushing specialist. But then came the workout — a performance scouts and coaches still talk about like some Paul Bunyan tall tale today.
