Component Video vs HDMI (1 Viewer)

Which is better?

I'm looking into a home theater system and some have the HDMI output and some do not . My TV has the input for both. Any ideas, previous research, numbers, etc to sway me either way.

HDMI will give you a better picture but probably not even that noticeable until you get above say 40" in screen size.

it also depends on how well your tv does with each type of input. I like the hdmi mostly because it is 1 cable instead of 5

I agree, less wires it also carries the audio signal , I buy my cables from ebay you can get them for about 10 bucks unless you want to pay 70 at bestbuy

HDMI will allow you to get the 1080p, component only goes as high as 1080i, which is still very impressive.

HDMI is the best, but it you will not notice a difference unless your tv is huge

The new video formats do not play well with component.

They still work but not completely.

You can't upconvert DVD's over the vast majority of upconverting players via component.

Also keep in mind that component is not High Definition Copy Protection (HDCP) capable so in the future, tv and HD discs may not work.

But can you upconvert DVD's via component on that player?

You can via HDMI.

As I said... They still work but not completely.

Keep in mind that HD DVD reserves the right to turn on the HDCP flag whenever they feel like it.

I use component out on one of my HD DVR's and it looks great but I wouldn't buy a new display device without HDMI.

I don't know why they keep changing things but they do. The ever changing standards have kept me from upgrading several pieces of equipment until things settle down.

I'm waiting for the elusive HDMI 1.3

to what? my xbox only does DVD's in 480p over component, the HD DVD are 1080i over component.
