Consequenses of an alternative energy source? (1 Viewer)

Redsigning homes? I dread walking into the dark cave built in the 70's so hopefully that does not resurface. A different method of cooling and heating is a logical change and available today but people have to adapt to it. Also, the spray foam insulation is an awesome product as long it doesn't come back as a toxant like asbestos. I spoke with a custom builder on a 4500 sq.ft home that used Spray foam. It adds about 5% to the cost but in that one particular home the cooling and heating cost will be about $250.

Cheaper to build, easier to build, less raw materials, much more energy efficient and will withstand winds and snowloads that would destroy a conventional house.

Why don't we see more of them? Fear. You can't get a loan for one, if you manage to get a loan, you can't get insurance because hidebound corporations are afraid of anything different.

We truly are a nation of mammoths careening headlong to destruction because some hairless primate waved a smoking stick at us.

A ******* men.:worthy:

Change is inevitable, but no one wants to actually go through it.

One of the most important aspects of energy usage is conservation. In no way can we as a society totally remove ourselves from using oil. However, there are many different ways that can be put into place to reduce dependency. Most of them have already been expressed here. The NEVs are pretty cool. A friend of mind drives one all over town. The next one is more fuel efficient vehicles in all and having people drive them. I love my Silverado, yet I have put on 1023 on it the last year. (just checked) My Cobalt on the other hand has 20,000 or so on it.

The next one is looking at our houses. When I bought mine, I knew it was built in 1964. However, the AC unit was recently replaced with a very efficient model. I have insulated the heck out of it, new doors and windows. My wife was making great fun of me. Yet, I always tell her to compare power bills with her friends and see what they pay.

As far as the packaging of things, some of it is insane. I have no idea how to improve it, but I am sure it can be.

The last thing is to take a new look at nuclear power. Even though no nukes have been built in many years, the research has gone on. They have to be much safer and much more efficient now then they were when those plants were built.

Would those things get us off oil? I doubt it. But it would make progress. Oil usage is down again this year as some of these ideas are being put into place. Refinery usage is way down again, last I read was 85% of capacity, yet there are no shortages.

The nuke idea scares me. For the most part, it's stable, but when it goes, it goes.

There's a guy (I can't remember the name or University) that is working on fusion instaed of fission which is supposed to be more safe and less waste IIRC.

Looking for peoples theory on what would happen if/when oil and gas are no longer a primary energy source. It is many peoples theory that the alternative fuels have intentionally been squashed by current energy companies and the gov't because of the negative affects it will have.

Questions I have?

How many jobs in the US is a result of oil and gas energy?
What is the annual payroll related to oil and gas?
What is the tax revenue on oil and gas in all markets(exploration, refining, shipping, consumer sales)?
What will be the affect on our economy and the world economy (trade balances) without oil and gas?
Where would those left unemployed from Oil and Gas go for employment?

I found this post through a search while seeing if this topic has been discussed.

i don't come here very often anymore but the most recent times that i have it has puzzled me as (as it has you) as to why if there are so many alternatives to the world's current reliance on oil and nuclear power why have they not been pushed for harder by the major presidential candidates, the worldwide media and governments in
general. i've taken notice of current advances in technology like:

An autopsy report by the Franklin County, Ohio coroner concluded that Meyer had died of a cerebral aneurysm,[22] but conspiracy theorists insist that he was poisoned to suppress the technology, and that oil companies and the United States government were involved in his death.[23][19][24]"

Ok, so one day i got to thinking about something Rebsaint said about "a government only being as sovereign as it's ability to enforce its own laws," in relation to the u.s' involment in iraq and such. but at the time however this statement struck me to be true about the willingness of governments worldwide to share information about technology with the entire human race.

these are my questions:

what are the ramifications of the human race currently having another massive technological revolution tommorow?
could worldwide suppression of such technology never have been about money as many citizens believe but rather about power, government and social control?

what would the negative impact of 300 million people in america possessing flying cars for example be? how could the police and military enforce such technology if we lived in a jettsons-like society where any of those 300 million people with flying cars had the ability at any moment to turn such a flying vehicle into a kamikazee missle on a whim like the boeing 767s of 911? similarly, what is to stop someone from killing you, hopping into their flying car (linked to an inexhaustable energy source) and simply evading the american police by flying over the atlantic ocean to a country where they can elude extradition for good?

wouldn't the primary incentive for governments to work collectively with the media to ensure that this information (if true) is not broadly known be the preservation of law and order and more importantly the survival of the species to protect humanity from itself? if you think like those in power and not in terms of money as profit (the super rich and super powerful already possess enough), wouldn't more power even absolute power be the motivation for such secrecy?
doesnt keeping the general population trapped and dependent on terrain-bound automobiles with a finite energy supply allow for a much more easily governed population?

when i was younger i heard of something called a COLD FUSION BOMB

http://www.bullshikipedia.com/index....ld_fusion_bomb
"Cold fusion bombs are probably one of the most dangerous, yet little known threats in the world. Reactive materials are easy to acquire. The bomb itself is undetectable on detonation (except by radiation sensitive instruments). Experiments that occurred before research was silenced indicates that it is feasible to produce cold fusion bombs on the order of 150-200 megatons (up to ten times greater than the most powerful atom bomb ever detonated). This would produce enough radioactive emissions to irradiate an entire continent with a single bomb. "
Cold fusion bombs generate radioactive emmissions but without the fireball, light, and heat. Because of this, they are virtually undetectable except for an accompanying "warm wind" as researchers called it. The wind is little more than a breeze but carries deadly charged radioactive particles for distances of up to 5 miles from the "blast" site (for a 1 megaton cold fusion device). These devices also use core reactive elements of deuterium and tritium (heavy water and and easily produceable gas). Because these are so easily obtained, this technology is readily available to most citizenry. "

now if something like this does exist would the government and other entrenched world powers be willing sit idly by while the media openly discussed the possibily of someone creating one of these like they do antrax when one of these bombs could potentially "produce enough radioactive emissions to irradiate an entire continent with a single bomb" and especially when materials needed to produce such a weapon "are so easily obtained" and "readily available to most citizenry" (see more on research into cold fusion http://peswiki.com/energy/Directory:Cold_Fusion)

i don't suppose that i can just walk into the pentagon and request the blueprints for a nuclear bomb or else what would be the big deal about keeping other nations from making one if any of 6 billion people could build something like this?
is my logic flawed?

what changes in society and the world in general would be necessary before mankind is ready to take that next step toward the next technological revolution? a new world order? a matrix like human cyborg worldwide mind http://www.truthnews.us/?p=232 . or could everything just remain the same in preparation for such a revolution?

ethanol is NOT an economically viable option, he fact that this agenda is pushed on us is ludicrus!

You have repeated this on several threads, but you never take the time to explain the basis of your opinion. While it may not be the end-all solution, why can't it be a part of our transition away from oil? Don't bother mentioning the shortcomings of corn because by now you should understand that other better suited sources exists.

Again, I point you to the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science to clear up some common misconceptions:

What do you base your objections to ethanol upon?

I don't really believe in conspiracies but IIRC the oil lobby is one of the largest. Says a little something to me.

It's doubtful that oil jobs would be phased out immediately. There will still be a need for fossil fuels for a long time to come because many, many , many everyday items are made with plastic. Anything plastic=petro products. Just think about how much plastic is used for.

Fossil fuels are the easiest, cheapest and most efficient ways of producing energy period, period, period. They are the basic platform of all our industrial processes. Retro fitting all of that would take a very long time for both cost and time reasons.

Everone who says we want to get off foreign oil is right. That won't make us oil independent just independent of foreign sources for our energy needs.

Some options are viable public transportation. The technology exists already in other countries. We could use it if the people of this country actually wanted it. Less suburbs, smaller houses, green houses that others talked about above, solar and nuclear. Nuclear is the most viable option presently but it comes with real security risks.

All of that aside, we are more likely to create jobs from a tech boom that lose them.

I wish the governemnt would subsidize useful public transportation as opposed to corn ethanol.

I would like to see more local level things than anything else. I don't know the economic viability but it would be nice to move to a more local ideal.

That about says it all. Even when Big Oil is gone or re-tooled as alternative energy providers or service companies, the highly skilled engineers will find jobs with foreign national oil companies and the blue collar workers will slowly transform their skills to other hard infrastructure work.

And, I don't think it's complete lunacy to imagine a day (way, way in the future) when the US becomes a net exporter of crude. Very unlikely, but not impossible as a niche business. Regardless of advancements in technology, I fully expect that 75 years from now there will still be many, many underdeveloped places around the globe that are still using the combustion engine in everyday life.
