Controversial music takes (3 Viewers)

A long time ago I was in a band that did original songs. One of my favorites had a (brief) bass solo. There was a transition that was sticking us early on - and then one day I told the bass player to just funk it up for measure, and it all just came together.
1 measure isn't a solo! It's a fill.

Nirvana wasn't even in the top 5 best bands of the grunge era. They are held in the light that they are purely because they're seen as the innovators of the movement. But they are nowhere near one of the best bands of the genre.

Also:
- EDM isn't bad. It's got more heart to it than most anything from the 2000s.
- The Eagles and Aerosmith are both pure garbage. I know they have some talented musicians, but their music is dog ****

What are your top 5 grunge bands?

Agree on the Eagles part, but no Aerosmith.

I don’t care much for Led Zeppelin. In fact, i find them quite boring.

My cousin shares your opinion. I do love them but readily admit many of my favorites songs they did were covers written by real blues guys years ago....

Then, STP hits the Stage and puts on probably one of the best 45 minute sets I've ever seen. No lighting, no pyro, just great music, and a ton of energy. Scott Weiland was a slithering snake force of nature. I didn't own a single one of their CD's.. I realized I knew everything they played, and I loved their music. I bought one album within the week, and I think another soon after.

One of my favorite bands of all time. They were way more dynamic than the other bands that came out of the 90's grunge genre....

I can't stand anything from Pink Floyd and will change the channel if any of their songs come on the radio. I'm the same way with REM too.

Pink Floyd? Really? Blasphomous!!!!!!

Agree on most of REM's stuff....

Oh and I think Guns and Roses are way overrated...Metallica too, to a lesser extent....

Soundgarden, AIC, PJ, STP for sure. That 5th spot is tough. Mad Season was awesome but only had one album. Temple of the Dog is similar. And those are basically different permutations of all the same guys anyway. Maybe Smashing Pumpkins? Maybe Nirvana I guess in 5th? I hadn't actually played it that far out when I posted it. lmao.

Grunge is generally considered to be bands from Seattle. Smashing Pumpkins are from Chicago, so not grunge. Maybe pick Mudhoney or Candlebox if you don't want to include Nirvana. BTW, did you know that the Nirvana lead singer killed himself in 1994? So their body of work took a bit of a hit as a result. Of the groups you listed, all had the lead singer die from suicide except Pearl Jam. With the 1st being Lane Staley in early the 2000s, if you don't include Nirvana. So those groups had longer to perform as a band and create music.

>>Pink Floyd? Really? Blasphomous!!!!!!

Yeah I know. I don't do acid so I don't really get their music, but luckily there is usually something else on the radio when Pink Floyd comes on Classic Vinyl or Classic Rewind.

I agree that Smashing Pumpkins is not grunge, but its the sound, not because of anything Seattle.

Also, I am in the camp that Kurt Cobain was murdered by Courtney Love, but either way, yeah he's dead.
The amount of heroin in his body when they found him is not consistent with then having the ability to shoot yourself like they claim he did.

I'll drop two bombs. I despise Elvis and Led Zeppelin. Not only are both are enormously over-rated, but they also stole the vast majority of their music from talented black bluesmen who never got any credit. Both pretended their music was their own when most of it wasn't just "inspired" by those blues riffs, but straight out plagiarized.

Elvis had a decent singing voice, but he was an obnoxious self-absorbed jerk (and, yes, I know a great many rock stars are guilty of that) and just not anywhere near as talented as he thought he was. And he did NOT invent rockabilly despite claims by some of his fans.

As for Zeppelin, Page was a good guitar player, but decidedly not elite like so many people seem to think. I can't stand Robert Plant's scraping voice and Bonham was just another drummer. And, again, a lot of stolen music turned into incredibly BORING songs. I have a list of what I consider the 10 most boring rock songs ever written. Zeppelin has three songs on that list: Dazed and Confused, Kashmir, and Stairway. If I never hear any of them again, it will be too soon.

I'm sure I just ticked off a lot of people, so I hope I have been true to your original intent, superchuck. :ezbill:

EDIT: Just noticed that antipop agrees with me on Zeppelin.

Yeah, that's why I was hesitant to put Smashing Pumpkins. And Nirvana is clearly better than Mudhoney, and Candlebox sucks. If we're sticking to Seattle grunge then I guess Nirvana does make my top 5. Barely.

After the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame decided to induct Whitney Houston and Notorious B. I. G. this year, I’ve got nothing. They win.

Nicely played. :clapbig:

NSFW language:

For the record, the Cabby is wrong. I've always thought of The Eagles as nothing but a poor imitation of America. I also agree with you on Aerosmith. "Dream On" is also on my list of top 10 most boring rock songs. I had a friend in high school who practically worshiped them, but I always found them underwhelming.

Alternative Rock. That's what they all were...

If anything, Nirvana was a bit more punk rock. Smashing Pumpkins is probably a bit closer to Punk at times too, but Alternative fits the bill.
