That's how I pronounce it. I've heard some people say it as "Oh-mee-crahn?Am I the only one that pronounces it "Ahmicron"?

My wife has her own way of saying it as "Ah-mnee-crahn". I tell her there's no "n" between the "m" and "i", but the more I say it, the more she digs in on saying it wrong. I mean, it's not worth getting divorced over and I'm used to her mispronouncing certain words. She grew up listening to her mother speak, who is from Honduras with English as her second language. Melk instead of milk, "hu" sounds with the "h" silent like "youman", "youmoungous", "youmid".
Still think having a March Mardi Gras this year will end up being an advantage. I'm sure a very last-minute cancellation will be a very costly PITA for many ... but city & parish officials still have about five more weeks to monitor conditions and make a call.Mayor Avegno just announced New Orleans is returning to an indoor mask mandate, which seems pretty silly at this point.
Possibly setting up for cancelling Mardi Gras again.

I know people can be very traditional about things ... but I don't see why the parade season couldn't be moved back a few weeks. For the sake of events, tourism, etc. ... would a March 22nd or March 29th Mardi Gras be all that different from a March 1st Mardi Gras? I know people have hotel reservations and flights and all that already. But still.
Celebrate Mardi Gras during lent?

Might we be seeing the peak for Louisiana? Possibly. Still hard to tell for sure, but the 7-day average is showing something:
Louiaina coronavirus cases by day
nola.com
Hospitalizations up to 1900, but that's still 1100 below the peak of Delta.
Mardi Gras starts in earnest in Mid Feb - Fat Tuesday is March 1.
I think this is a preemptive move to try and blow the curve sooner.
However, here is what i have heard from Tulane....they are already seeing a downward trend in positivity. SLIGHT but downward. I think i had posted here back in December that their modeling showed peak 3rd week of January for current wave. If that holds, then by mid Feb we should be seeing mad reduction in positivity.
So i think this mask mandate is to curb that peak just a tad sooner to be CLEAR for Mardi Gras 2022.
Just my opinon.
The source I use for this stuff is Jeff Asher - for whatever its worth his data shows that cases in Orleans have already peaked. I think we are about to see a South Africa-like downslope.
Anyway, our city is one of the most vaxxed and boosted places in the South and we can see pretty clearly from [pick an example - DC, NYC, etc.] that mask and even vaccine mandates do jack squat for omicron. Even CDC is signaling that cloth masks are basically useless at this point. An Orleans mask mandate is really only going to cause disruptions to 2 years worth of pent-up Mardi Gras plans without any benefit to public health. Or maybe send some of those events to Jefferson Parish as happened this summer.
Its counterproductive theater. But I am hopeful that maybe this is when the City will finally say "nah we're good.'
Jeff's stuff is rock solid - I think I remember the tweet you're talking about (where he saw the first sign of a top).
I agree with L4S that there's enough time here to not need to jump to the conclusion that an MG cancellation is coming. I know the cynics like to think that the mayor enjoys canceling things but that's not realistic. If the chart falls off as quickly as it did elsewhere and as people like Jeff think it will, that should hopefully clear the way.
