I found this really interesting and maybe something of value for future outbreaks

A research paper five infectious-disease researchers in China describes a surprising trend on the Chinese social-media platform WeChat: Usage of keywords related to the new coronavirus spiked more than two weeks before officials confirmed the first cases.
The paper, released in February, analyzed the prevalence of the terms "SARS," its Chinese equivalent "Feidian," "coronavirus," "shortness of breath," "dyspnea," and "diarrhea" in posts and searches on WeChat from November 17 to December 31. Their findings suggest "abnormal spikes and increases" in the usage of all the keywords during that time.

6 weeks. It took our leaders 6 weeks to quit calling it the flu and disregarding the medical advice of the experts of the entire world. 6 weeks during a pandemic when the #1 goal is to buy time and slow the spread. 6 weeks.

Airlines aren't shut down, they were getting crushed long before stay at home orders because people and businesses quit flying long before any stay at home orders.
Oil began collapsing when China shut down.
Cruise ships quit running but only after it started costing them more money than they were making.
Hotels, rental cars and restaurants were already shutting down before stay at home orders were being issued because most were losing money.
Casinos shut down before any stay at home orders because it was costing them more money to stay open than they were making.
Car sales were down 16% quarter to quarter before any lockdown order was announced.
Concerts, conventions and sporting events started cancelling before any lockdowns were announced.
Banks were already under pressure due to all of the above before shutdowns began.

What people aren't understanding is the virus was going to kill the economy either way. You can't wipe out the energy, travel, restaurant, autos, entertianment and the financial sectors without having a MAJOR recession. If the shutdown orders weren't in place and everywhere in the country started to look like NYC do you think the economy was going to hold up to that?

The economy was never an either or proposition. It was either the economy is going to collapse and we were going to have millions die or the economy was going to collapse and we were going to have thousands die. The biggest difference. If we really wanted to protect the economy we would have shut down international travel and cranked up testing from day 1 while stockpiling PPE. Seriously, it was basic math and common sense. We could already be coming out of this if we just used the country's pandemic playbook that was set up very specifically for this. That's it. That's all we had to do.

I agree with all you said but i’m just relieved that they are finally listening to science. As the saying goes, better late than never.

i appreciate your participation here, but "better late than never" is a cop out.

ill stop here and we can have this over on the MAP board.

These projections have been updated. It looks like peak dates have generally moved forward. The ranges they provide even 7 days out for LA has huge margins which makes sense due to the lack of testing. DC has much tighter margins.

i went sunday first thing in am ( was no 3 shopper lol )

we spent close to $400 - we supplied ourselves for an additional 2 weeks.

Glad i did- just notified that local hospital in Mandeville went from 0 cases up til Monday to 8 today 3 on vent.

its been harboring here on NS for a good week. Now its much closer to home and i suspect things will rapidly decline here.

im hopeful that the stay home measure will mitigate this

question for the lay person here....projected deaths plateau but then stay at that level for 2 months. are they saying that come June 1 thats it? why wouldnt it slope down? im confused.

to be equally fair, POTUS stood in front of the Country and said this was nothing more than a flu. Said we had 15 cases and soon will be 5 then zero.

So when you dont take the canary in the coalmines death seriously, you pass the point of no return. We did that. By completely ignoring China and Italy and what they showed us. They were the canaries. And because our leader had other things to focus on ( re election ), turned a blind eye to the canaries.

now the mine is full of noxious gas and its now WHO do we seal off and lose vs evacuating the mine and save ALL.

thats the whole point here.

You want to repair devisiveness? Stand in front of the American people and apologize for downplaying this. Tell them that it was incorrect and for that im sorry.

Thats where it starts.

im not holding my breath.

I agree. It’s frustrating that they are not admitting fault. The travel restrictions were a joke. Transportation in and out of the country should have been halted earlier. Who knows how many people were infected by someone who went to a face to face meeting in another country that could have been done using technology or by someone who wasn’t going to cancel the vacation they had planned for years. I get it. It’s also just as bad as people not knowing what was going on in other countries like Italy, believing China’s understated death rate, and thinking it couldn’t happen to us. That’s on society.

Great post, exactly how I feel....

The reason it took so long is because the hatred and distrust between the 2 parties in DC is so bad it was all calculated political moves on both sides instead of doing what was right for the people.

Hindsight is always crystal clear but restricting travel from China (Jan31) occurred 9-10 days after first US reported case. By some accounts, it was still unclear if human to human transmission was occurring (WHO Jan14). Believing China was the biggest error in my opinion.

Right....keep believing that....

I am confused. The US is needing medical supplies badly, but we are sending medical supplies to other countries. Now I see that Russia is sending medical supplies to the US.

What exactly are we sending and receiving?
The US was sending surgical medical supplies, not the supplies required for the virus, as I understand it.
