I've been banging this drum, even at work, that the airlines needed to wake the fork up and give everyone a mask and make it mandatory for flying. Should have been doing this two months ago.

That's four carriers now, and Southwest is mulling it, but I expect them to follow suit very soon. The bigger deal is securing masks.

There is no way I would get on an airplane or cruise or even stay in a hotel/motel until a vaccine is ready. I would be concerned about buses and trains also. This puts a plus in having a motorhome to travel in. But I am retired so I have plenty of time.

I understand that a lot of people have to fly for their work. In their case I would wear a mask whether it was required or not. Are the airlines spreading out the passengers to try to social distancing?

I don't know. But my brother in laws will be flying Delta on Monday when the masks requirement starts. They told me Delta is supposed to provide masks to those who don't have one before boarding. I'll be curious to hear what their experience will be.

I'd tell them to have their own mask, just in case.

Good article

For all the praise and adoration the nurses and doctors are getting (every bit well deserved) I hope some of that gets down to the bus drivers, grocery store workers, janitors etc

NEW YORK (AP) — As America tentatively emerges from weeks of lockdowns, the pandemic has taken its toll on workers who have been on the front lines all along.

They have been packing and delivering supplies, caring for the sick and elderly, and keeping streets and buildings clean.

They have also watched their co-workers fall ill. Thousands have gotten sick themselves. Many have died.

The burden has been borne unevenly across gender, racial and socioeconomic lines, according to an Associated Press analysis of census data in the country’s 100 largest cities. They are mostly women, people of color and more likely to be immigrants.

Workers deemed “essential” are also more likely to live below the federal poverty line or hover just above it. They are more likely to have children at home, and many live with others who also have front-line jobs.

“What is important about this pandemic is that it has shined a spotlight on workers who have always been essential but before this were invisible,” said David Michaels, professor of environmental and occupational health at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University............

The other thing that article doesn’t mention and is an issue near my heart as I have 4 great friends and coworkers who are them is the DACA students who are out there putting themselves at risk. There are over 27,000 doctors and nurses that are DACA students, over 9,000 teachers providing distance learning to children, tens of thousands more in managerial roles, thousands more in the law enforcement and fire fighting careers. Still going to work, risking their lives and their families lives to take care of the US citizens. And for what? A potential end for 683,000 people. 683,000 who have to finish high school to keep their status. And yet, a Supreme Court decision may make this a situation where their lives and careers are upended. These are young people we should be bending over backwards to keep. But yet.....

A more cynical and satirical view (and not wrong)

Good news, front-line worker: You are essential. No, more than that: You are a hero.

Look, some jets are flying over!

Here is your salute! Here is your banging of pans! Look, your employers have made you — with their own dollars! — a commercial with gentle piano music, in the tenderest possible tone, to say thank you. We salute you.

No, we do more than that: We owe you a debt of gratitude. No, wait, let us not introduce the word “debt,” which might imply monetary compensation of some kind. You are a hero, after all. You are beyond all that money nonsense. We are beyond all that.

Look, here are some more jets!

We cannot hope to thank you for this sacrifice you are making so we can be fed and entertained and comforted. But we will offer you this word: essential!

Do you not feel better? Is the word itself not better than any kind of safety gear? Okay, here are some masks — not to wear, but affixed together into a big collage, as a symbol! As the vice president has shown, masks are optional.

But symbolism — that is essential..........

I agree with him completely. It’s a sham. It shows the horrible inequities in this country. It shows, along with the trillions in stimulus, just how inequitable and rigged this country has become. While banks and corporations are getting paid, millionaires and billionaires holding up in their secure acreage, the lower middle income workers out busting their butts.

There was a really cool post by a nurse I saw when asked about being a hero. Her words were essentially I simply wish people would stay at home so I wouldn’t have to be a hero.

You think the thousands of meat packers think they are heros? I bet they would rather have a livable wage and safe working conditions.

Anyone sit back and really think about what a cluster fork this shirt all is......it hurts your brain to think about it all.

We didn't need to he told by China that there was a problem. When did they lock down the city of Wuhan? January 23 (ish)?

They were literally welding the doors of apartment buildings to keep the people inside. We can't say that we didn't know. Just read this thread. We're not insiders or something. We're a bunch of goofs who happen to like the same football team and we knew.
Not to mention that we have or had in the past intelligence operatives who watch this kind of thing. If that program was cut or ignored, there's only 1 person to blame.

It’s similar to people saying to retail workers what a shame it is that they have to work on thanksgiving or Christmas (while at the store)

With the workers thinking “if you kept your arse at home I wouldn’t have to work”

And once this is all over and things go back to normal they won’t even get the essential hero lip service anymore

They’ll go right back to being invisible, under appreciated, underpaid and taken advantage of

Some U.S. government military bombers flew over Uptown New Orleans this morning to pass over Children's and Touro. The knowledge that they could obliterate my house and family at a moment's notice was way more re-assuring than, say, giving me a no-interest break on paying my mortgage for a couple of months I guess.

I'm sure there will be some more celebrities doing commercials thanking them and Ellen will pick 2 or 3 to do something for.
