Merl definitely has a point. This thread is not near as useful as it was two weeks ago....a month ago. I guess the whole situation as weighed on all of us.

I'll say this. My view has changed significantly from early March. I was 100% behind the lockdown and I even thought we weren't doing enough (i.e. needed to be stricter for the greater good). I even made fun of some friends that didn't take everything as seriously as I thought it should be taken (at the time). But, with careful analysis of what's going on around us and taking into account the considerable damage this is doing to the economy, I haveta admit, I've turned. I think the economy should open up ASAP in a coordinated, logical manner. In fact, it shoulda happened two weeks ago. For the eventual pockets of increased cases, move resources accordingly. This is worse than the flu. This is more contagious than the flu. But it's something that we should be able to take care of with a coordinated, federally supported effort.

Hate to say it but open the sheet up

Got gas today at a busy station and literally I was the only one with a mask and that includes the two cashiers

We would be better off just forcing businesses to require masks than the crap happening now

The challenge is the division of whether to reopen or not is split right down the usual political lines with the usual people on the usual sides taking fairly predictable positions (including the above it alls). Since we are at the "Do we reopen?" phase of things it's almost impossible to discuss without politics getting involved.

Yeah, I agree. We have to be smart about opening back up. If we go back to January business as usual, we're gonna be in a world of hurt. But if we're smart and slowly open things back up, I think it's doable.

Too many people still think it's no big deal and they have nothing to worry about.

Agreed. I'm not defending Merl being a drama queen, just saying I agree with his general point.

Part of the problem is that it is impossible to separate discussion of COVID-19 from politics because all of the decisions are seemingly being made based on politics and the entire pandemic has been politicized.

I mean, what is there left to say really? It's all come down to a political decision of do we stay in a semi-lock down or do we open up and let the chips fall where they may. Everyone knows the fact by now about the virus, wearing a mask, etc. All that is really left is the weighing of the options which by it's nature is political.

And I think the discussion continues because we are all still concerned, regardless of how we think this should be handled going forward, and we are all bored with not much else to think or talk about.

Costco is doing the right thing. These selfish, uncaring jerks who refuse to wear a mask need to be put in their place. And that place is outside the store. I'm glad she won't shop at Costco any more. I'll feel safer since I won't be breathing in her droplets though my mask.

It's not political; it's a matter of public safety and order. You stop at a red light or a stop sign. That's not an impediment to your freedom. I live in a town that could renamed "Four Way Stop Town." It's annoying, but it's the law--and it's a lot more annoying than wearing a mask. We sacrifice a lot of things for the sake of order and public safety. Do these yahoos suggest that we ignore traffic restrictions?

We live in a society, and that means that my freedom to swing my arm ends with the person next to me's nose. To me, not wearing a mask in a building under these circumstances is tantamount to an assault with a microscopic weapon.

I would agree with this if there was any chance that we would proceed in a logical manner or if there was any Federally coordinated or supported effort. But there isn't. All there is coming from the Federal government is rhetoric that is contradictory to the phase plan that the Federal Government issued. And, there is no more guidance on that plan because the Federal government decided that the CDC was not allowed to release it's plan for how to implement the phase plan that the Federal government prepared and endorsed.

I have substituted Federal government for a certain name in an effort to avoid being "political", but there is really no other description for what is going on.

Yeah, putting the guidance out there and then telling the states to go figure it out is a pretty crappy public policy strategy. Disappointing because these decisions are made based on political calculations rather than public health.

Meh, it is what it is, and people really need to educate themselves on how to avoid CV19 as best they can because I'm not sure how much we can rely on federal funds to get us through the next couple of months.
