Darren Sproles considers un-retirement (1 Viewer)

I love Sproles aka Mighty Mouse but at this point, I would rather Reggie Bush before Sproles.

I don't necessarily fault a person for not wanting to bring back Sproles...

But to make the statement you made. "At this point", you'd rather bring back Reggie Bush....

Really? You'd rather bring back a guy who hasn't played since 2016........and in that ENTIRE SEASON, he had MINUS 3 YARDS rushing...........and 7 total catches for 90 yards....which honestly looks like one of his normal 1-game stat-lines as a Saint.

"At this point"......you'd take that over what Sproles has done.....even with his last 2 seasons of the injury bug.

Again.....nothing wrong with not wanting to bring back Sproles.....that's an opinion........but someone saying they'd take Reggie Bush at this point over Sproles has either (a) an extreme bias against Sproles or (b) a severe lack of basic football knowledge.

Two scenarios in which I would consider it:
1. Injury to Alvin Kamara and/or Dwayne Washington
2. Slot receiver/return role similar to usage of Tommylee Lewis and Austin Carr.

The more I thought about the Sproles signing I’m not so sure I would give him a roster spot.. I would tell him to stay in football shape and keep him on speed dial for anything involving scenario 1 where Kamara might miss a few games or something.

No way do I think he would he be a slot receiver here especially with the camp battles we will have at WR. He’s always been a threat out of the backfield. Even more so this late in his career that’s really the only place we could create some mismatches. He would have a difficult time getting separation in the slot and not much to take advantage of for Payton.

I do think he could offer a legit return man but likely as a backup and someone we know is reliable to catch a clean punt while also having the IQ in a scenario to fair catch it or let it go.

I think at this point he will have to wait around for the right team on his list to give him a call do to an injury. He knows the system and we have an entire playbook to dust off for him. Again only in the scenario of Kamara missing time would I give him a ring.

really, if he wants to keep it going, and make a run, then sign him for the right price. I cant see how it hurts us. We have the roster spots and can be creative. The guy still has intangibles that other players dont, they just need to be managed very closely. We could get production out of him. More than guys on our roster the last few years

put him and kamara in the back field and send each one out for a pass. I mean if he hasnt lost to many steps.. thats a nightmare.

No, no, no, and even more No.

Lets review, he'll turn 36 this month. Hasn't topped 200 yards either rushing or receiving in the last two years, and only scored one touchdown. Yet half the board wants to give him a precious roster spot.

I wonder, do all fan bases want to sign old, used up, players; or is it just a Who Dat Nation kinda thing? I remember the first 20 years of Saints football, and these kind of signings were how we rolled. Who can forget how the fan base got so excited when we signed Earl Campbell? We signed every used up, former star, on their last leg for a sad, underwhelming, last pay check, before they retired. And our record showed the effects of such signings. We traded Sproles for a 5th round pick in 2014, and now that he's 5 years older, half the board wants him back. This thread reminds me that I need to take my blood pressure meds, and maybe even have a drink. SMH

Agreed...we all fall victim of wanting a guy for his name, and not for his actual ability.

Truth is, a RB at age 36 just isn't explosive enough anymore. We're better off giving that roster spot to Ozigbo or Buck Allen. Sproles is not the Sproles we remember. He is an under-sized, oft-injured, 36 year old player that has lost several steps and goes down just from a defender touching him. We can do better with the young guys.

If we had not signed Sherels to the role of ST return specialist then I would be in favor of giving him a shot. As it stands as a RB he would be 3 or 4th option. The other consideration is who do you cut from the 53 for him to make it?

He’s not a change of pace from Kamara. He does the same things as Kamara, just not as well.

The more I stew on this, the more I think this makes absolute sense. For the right price. I think Sproles could have a great year with the other guys around him and Brees throwing the ball. Maybe I’m just having crazy thoughts but the more and more I think about it the more and more I would like to see a shotgun split set of Kamara and Sproles

No, you're not crazy.

Some of these people are acting like we'd be asking Sproles to be 2011 Sproles again.

He'd be a guy who comes in to give Kamara a breather ......as you indicated, some split sets...........maybe a few punt/kick returns, line up at WR, etc.

What if Kamara misses time? At this point we don't have anyone else on the roster with his skillset..

Actually, Buck Allen has a very similar skill-set to AK41, he’s just a poor man’s version of AK41.

If AK41 is the PS4, Buck Allen is the original XBOX.

I've watched a few highlights and I do agree that you can see some AK in him, and I do mean some.
The question will be is he better than Sproles? Can he be the same type of threat that Sproles is? Can he return kicks or punts? I may be a little bias because I know what Sproles brought to this offense but I would hate to see us go into the season with only back who can do what Kamara can do. If Allen is it, then that will be a good thing.

Buck Allen won’t make the team unless we suffer injuries. Sproles is the guy you call if you suffer injuries and are relying on Buck Allen. Neither are attractive options.
