If you have read the what do you collect thread, you would know that I enjoy collecting items from WWII. One of the items that I picked up was program of a Ballet in New Orleans in 1943 at The Municipal Theatre. It was called "Trilogy" I am unsure. I picked the item up because of the New Orleans connection and I think that I paid $2 for it. In the WWII collecting world. This would be a period Item and also a Home front item as well.

Part of the fun of collecting these things is finding connections to other things. I am going to tell the tale of the connection, but I am also going to post pics of the program so you can see the Advertising. None of it back then was National. Everything was local.

The Ballet starred: Mia Slavenska and David Tihmar.

The first odd connection was as an ad for the stage curtains. They were actually manufactured in Oklahoma City. I thought that to be a strange kind of Twist... But then after a little more research on the piece I found out that Mr. David Tihmar was actually born in Blair Ok. A lonely, hot and flat part of America, and he ended up running the Lyric theatre here in Oklahoma City until his death in 1971.

David Tihmar grew up dancing and performing and also was an extra in a few movies as well. Most notably as an uncredited dancer in the 1942 film "Holiday Inn" starring Bing Crosby.

Being that Mr. Tihmar was buried in NW Oklahoma City, I thought that it only fitting that I take a motorcycle ride to his gravesite and pay a visit. And that's what I did. He is buried next to his mother and father. And no where do I find any mention of him being Married nor having children.

Anyways... Here is the Program in it's entirety. Hope that some of you enjoy the ads from the past.

I'm sure that was the playbill they had printed for general use to hand out at each event rather than a different printing for each with the individual date and performance on the front.

That's what I would guess. Those things are like reading a magazine where 95 percent of it is ads. Of course, the ads become much more interesting in a cultural anthropology way 75 years on.

man, i KNOW we've talked about this before
but i went through the whole collection thread and all of my PMs and i can't find it
either i'm having the most lucid deja vu ever, or i can remove 'onset' from the description

anyway very cool stuff

Maybe they just replaced the center page, but the center page has the program of the performance, continued on 20. Pp 12-13, 20.
