Dead Money for Byrd? [MOD EDIT: Should he be cut right now] (1 Viewer)

Patience. His number drops significantly after this year. Down to 3M from something like 10M, IIRC. With all the injuries and the season in a relative state of stagnation, you just don't gain anything by cutting him now.

But I will say, they moved up to draft Bell for a reason..................

We only have two free safeties on the roster, and you want to get rid of one of them in the middle of the season?... So who's going to replace him? As sucky as Byrd has played this season, he is still better than any free agent out there... or do you want Harper as a free safety?

Sadly, we don't have the cap space to cut him. He'd have been long gone if there was enough space.

He's definitely gone after this season though.

He doesn't belong on the roster, even if he was to take a pay cut to minimal salary. He is just a bad football player.

I noticed that Von Bell made an excellent stop on 3rd down against the Chiefs, flying up the field and knifing through blockers to tackle the ball carrier before the 1st down marker. If he keeps making plays like that he deserves to see the field.

New Orleans Saints Multi-Year Dead Money | Spotrac

2016 - $18,900,000
2017 - $8,000,000
2018 - $4,600,000
2019 - $1,200,000
2020 - UFA

says the saints have $9,398,494 in cap space currently, so i believe the saints can carry that over to 2017.

dead money (For now) for 2017 is:
byrd (likely) - $8,000,000
cj spiller - $2,500,000
browner - $1,300,000
lewis - $3,600,000
grayson - $366,584
davis tull - $110,866
richardson - $1,668
tovell - $3,000
tabb - $1,000
eulls - $3,334

so $15,886,452 total, saints can carry over $9,398,494. so $6,487,958 taken up in 2017 "cap" in dead money.

Nice info. Thanks for the link. Interesting to see it all laid out in front of you like that.

I think it's hilarious that they even list amounts like the $2000 in dead money it'd cost us to cut Edebali this year and $4000 if we were to cut Breaux next year. Such tiny drops in the bucket...

Each year we look forward to the dead money liberation...but the problem is that we acquire bad contracts as quickly as we get rid of them...so that day never comes.

Start Bell, but we don't have the safety depth to cut him. If Bell were to get hurt, we'd be signing someone off the street to start at FS. Cut Byrd as soon on Monday after Week 17.

You say this as if it is a bad thing. The way Byrd is playing, I guarantee you that there is a street free agent out there that could provide more than he does. The issue is cap space; his dead money is all that is keeping him on the team right now.

can we stop with one sentence thread ?

Make a poll if you have that question that you need answer to. It seems that is becoming the new trend.

Plus Bell has been the starter for the last 3 games, playing more snaps than Byrd. So Bell is playing...

According to this site if we cut him this year his cap hit will be 18 million but if we cut him next year it will be 8 million.

You also gain 3.7m in cap space next year.

If we rollover the 9 million this year, he's effectively a net gain next year after we cut him. The dead money will look worse on paper, but it won't actually be eating up our 2017 cap space as we'll of paid for his dead money with leftover 2016 cap.

That was probably Loomis' plan all along. We were wondering why create all this cap space this year. Now it makes sense. We could also June 1st cut him and spread the hit out if we want to but probably no reason to do that.
