Decade Defining Songs: 1990s (1 Viewer)

For better or worse, I will always associate the summer of 1997 with the below song and Final Fantasy VII.

Definitely for worse. This whole thread is terrible.

One Week- Barenaked Ladies.

Two of the biggest 90s hits, "One Week" by BNL and "You Outta Know" by Alanis M. were songs that the artists didn't particularly like and didn't really even want to include on the album. In both instances, smart producers intervened and told them that if they did them right, those songs would be hits.

I think each of those singles were not only hits, but the biggest hit that each of those artists ever had.

As far as rock music goes, there is a really big divide between the early and late 90's, since everyone seemed to collectively overdose around 1995.

Early 90's was a response to the over-produced and corny 80's rock. It had to be raw, usually a little whiny, and the lyrics weren't allowed to make sense.

After grunge faded, rock branched out a little bit before Limp Bizkit's "Nookie" killed rock music forever in 1999.

You had the pop punk movement

The random cheery upbeat music

And who could forget the ska

I'll second anything from STP, Alice in Chains, Metallica (I mean, seriously, the Black Album turned that whole metal scene into mainstream.. for better or worse), MM Bosstones, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Tool...

But to add..

Tool - Aenima

Metallica - the entire black album

Smashing Pumpkins - most of Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness

Reel Big Fish - Sell Out

RHCP - Give it Away Now (only song of their I dig)

Korn - Freak on a Leash (late 90's).. that bridge is too weird, but everyone's heard it.

Jewel - You were meant for me

I second Radio Head - Creep

Smash Mouth - All Star and Walkin on the Sun

Limp Bizkit - Nookie

Enimem - My Name is (and a ton of others)

Britney Spears - Hit me Baby One More Time (as much as I'm not a fan, you can't deny it was everywhere)

Rickey Martin - Livin La Vida Loca

Brandy and Monica - The Boy is Mine

Third Eye Blind - Semi Charmed Life

Marilyn Manson - Beautiful People

Pearl Jam - Jeremy
