New Orleans coach Sean Payton sat in the stands at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, intently watching the North team defense. The Saints pick 10th in the April 26-27 NFL draft, and it will be a surprise if they don't base their selection on immediate defensive help.
That's what's needed to catch New England, the undefeated AFC champion and the franchise that Payton's Saints and every other NFL organization is trying to emulate/catch.
"I think to some degree you hope you're making steps forward, and obviously from a record standpoint, we didn't this year," said Payton, whose Saints fell from 10-6 and the NFC Championship Game to 7-9 this season. "But I think people see that consistency in what you're getting from New England, and that's what we're all aspiring to be -- to get in the postseason each year, win the division and then make a run."
