My thoughts on the position.
Locks Jordan, Davenport
Their spot to lose
DE Hendrickson, Granderson, Edwards
Bubble: Spence, Hunt
Cam Jordan is a top 3 DE in the league not only is he an elite pass rusher he is also great against the run. On to of that he can be just as disruptive rushing from the inside on occasion.
Marcus Davenport catches a lot of undeserved hate from some Saints fans but when you watch him you can see he is a special talent. His biggest issue he was as raw as they come out of college but has managed to put up some impressive numbers in his short time on the field. With a full season don't be surprised to see him put up 12 to 13 sacks.
Trey Hendrickson is the most explosive player off the line on this team and while ve will never be an above average run defender due to his short arms, he can become the pass rush specialist the team needs with his explosive first step and quickness, that more than makes up for it. This should be the season he becomes our pass rush specialist and thrives in that role.
Mario Edwards Jr is the opposite of Hendrickson, while he lacks a pass rush he is an excellent run defender, who can slide inside at the 3tech making him valuable as a versatile guy in the rotation.
This is as deep and talented a group of DEs as we ever had under Payton and potentially on of the best of we see the young guys step up.
Carl Granderson is the teams developmental project, but don't overlook him he has potential to become a solid 3 down DE. What I've seen of him he is similar to Junior Gallette but with better length and less likely to have off the field issues. While he isn't the elite athlete Jordan and Davenport are he is still better than average. He has the length to hold up at the point of attack against the run with enough quickness off the line to still get pressure. He also has the frame to out on another 10 to 15 pounds which will help him hold up at the line better.
Margus Hunt right now is in competition with Edwards for a roster spot. Both have a similar skill set, as pass rushers both are closets even, but Edwards holds a slight advantage in run defense and age (7 years younger). If someone struggle or gets injured, Hunt is great insurance/depth to have.
Noah Spence was signed after injuries left the team thin at DE, but for now he is on the bubble with Hunt. Spence will mostly be in competition with Granderson. Granderson's length gives him the advantage as Spence at best will only be a pass rush specialist and insurance much like Hunt.
Edit he's out with an ACL
