Defensive end Kasim Edebali is blossoming into promising pass rusher for Saints

By Joel Erickson -- Advocate

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. - The blue chip prospects the New Orleans Saints have been stockpiling to rebuild their pass rush have been hit hard by a run of bad injury luck this summer.

First, 2015 second-round pick Hau'oli Kikaha went down at the end of OTAs with a torn ACL. Then 2016's top pick, defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins, broke the fibula in his left leg on Monday during a goal-line drill, sidelining the rookie for up to six weeks.

Now, the Saints might find themselves leaning on the kind of developmental player the franchise has been famous for finding under Sean Payton to provide a consistent complement to Pro Bowler Cameron Jordan.

Kasim Edebali, a native of Germany who signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Boston College in 2014, piled up two sacks in 24 snaps against New England Patriots left tackle Nate Solder in Thursday's preseason game.

"I told you guys about Kasim," Jordan said. "That guy is talented."

Definitely expecting 10-12 sacks from this guy if he stays healthy.

Edebali has the potential of being a Junior Galette(minus the self destruction)type pass rusher opposite Cam. I like Tull & Obum, but Edebali has clearly elevated his game. W/all the injuries & what not, its awesome to see Edebali coming up.

Very good highlight of Edebali. This kid couldn't have come along and stepped up at a better time. If he can continue to show what he has and keep improving then our pass rush issues have been solved. Just entering his prime at 26 years old and should have the best football of his career ahead of him. Never thought I would say it would be disappointing if he didn't crack 12 sacks but that's what I expect from him.

Edebail had a outstanding game I seriously believe he can get 15 plus sacks this year. I believe Edebail has the fastest get off the line quickness in the league not only that his speed to power transition compares to Elvis Dumervil. Edebail is Junior Galette's only positive mark he left with the Saints.

Edibali impressed the hell out of me. I know it was a preseason game, but the way he looked was dominant. We always knew he had the motor, but I'm still surprised. I can't wait to see him out there this season.

We have to give props to Bill Johnson for seeing steady improvement of our d-linemen. If the guy has the talent he can make something out of them.

Edabali has serious talent. But the flack our coaches have caught in the past was quite undeserved. This could be two UDFAs that are more than quality starters for us going forward.

Imagine if David Onyemata or Obum Gwachum have a similar trajectory with their physical gifts...
