I was touched when a dedication appeared on the screen at the end of the movie. It was dedicated to the people of New Orleans for their strength and enduring spirit.
The movie started with a huge explosion on a ferry boat right under the crescent city connection on fat tuesday post katrina. From there we were taken on a 2 hour and 10 minute roller coaster ride that couldn't disappoint if it tried. Simply put (or not so simply) this movie mixes sci-fi, crime, and action together with a dash of suspense. Denzel's character is a native New Orleanian who works for the ATF and is brought in to try to figure out who is behind the explosion. He soon meets a team of scientists headed by Val Kilmer who are using brand new technology that allows them to fold time back onto itself creating a wormhole through which they can see 4 days into the past. This helps the team to solve crimes and with Denzel they attempt to solve this one. Not wanting to give anything else away I will just say that the acting was great, but Denzel always is anyway. Paula Patton is a dead ringer for Alicia Keys but that's beside the point. She was excellent. I can't say enough good things about this movie. I will definitely see it again. I don't see many movies for full price but this one was worth twice that much. I loved the little touches in the movie that you would only notice and appreciate if you were from New Orleans. Things like bumper stickers for local radio stations on people's workstations. They showed the devastation in the 9th ward and referenced Katrina a few times. It was very interesting to see how they worked Katrina into the story to explain why parts of the city looked the way they did.
We give this movie a 10 out of 5 because it should be seen twice in the theater. ;)

Great review! I was looking foward to catching Deja Vu. They don't have lame N.O. accent attempts in it do they?

Great question. That would have annoyed the crap out of me. I am happy to say it's not another "The Big Easy". No one tried to attempt a fake accent. One guy at the beginning answers the phone and says "ATF, New Orleenz" which bothered me at first, but then I realized not everyone that lives and/or works in NO is originally from there. That in addition to the fact that people who work for the federal government are often sent all over the country to work and therefore wouldn't sound like they were from that area made his "un-authentic" accent justifiable. And honestly, that was the only time I even thought about whether the movie was accurate or not for the whole rest of the movie. I guess that means it was pretty accurate. It also moved very quickly and you had to pay attention to some details so that kept me from being worried about it.

Good to see that accent myth get dispelled in the movies. Most people I run across tell me I sort of have a New York accent. Although one guy did tell me I had an "Indiana no-accent accent."

I worked on the helicopters seen in the movie. They were based with us while filming the movie.

Definitely going to check this out.

I am a fan of both Denzel and Val Kilmer and I would love to see how they interact with each other.

My son and I saw it tonight also and must say its the best movie that I have ever seen depicting New Orleans as it really seems. The sets were real using accurate names of surroundings and no fake Cajun accents were used by the actors.

Indeed a very good movie.

Thank you Rob for your reviews of Deja vu and Casino. You have made me a believer, I want to see them both!

Better than Down By Law?

Saw it tonight and it met all expectations.

I agree with Hennessey in how it was cool to see how they integrated Katrina into the story a little.

I was under the impression that it was going to be just a movie set in the city but it wouldn't flaunt the fact that it was set in New Orleans. Boy, was I wrong.

I'll be seeing it a second time with my girlfriend once I get back home (I'm in South Carolina for Thanksgiving and hitting up the Saints game tommorow), and then again with my friend in Slidell, most likely.

Think "Butterfly Effect" with an action twist.
