I am working on a Dell 1525 laptop. The screen will be bright when it turns on. After about 10-15 seconds, I hear a sound as if something powered down and the screen goes dim. Now, it could either be the backlight or the inverter. I am leaning towards the inverter because of the sound that I am hearing.

What say ya?

your hunch is probably right. i've replaced a few inverters on dell latitudes for similar issues.

Inverters tend to go out more often then the backlights. The funny part is that the cheaper part to replace is the backlight itself. Usually, anyway but its far more of a pain the arse to replace then the inverter.

the 1525 isn't too bad to replace the inverter on. Dell is good about offering up service manuals on there stuff. with pics, too.

Appears the inverter was the culprit. Running over an hour with no issues.
