- Delvin Breaux ahead of schedule. Could return week 6 vs CAR
NFL | Delvin Breaux (leg) ahead of schedule - Rotoworld.com

- Terron Armstead not dealing with long-term injury according to payton. I'm thinking we held him out vs SD knowing he would get an extra week of rest prior to bye week. Hopefully the big man returns week 6.
Recent news on Terron Armstead - New Orleans Saints - Rotoworld.com

- Dannell Ellerbe downgraded to OUT vs SD. No surprise here however with the bye week I believe Ellerbe plays vs CAR
Saints downgrade LB Dannell Ellerbe to out vs. Chargers | NOLA.com

These would be 3 HUGE upgrades to have following the bye week. Obviously Breaux returning is a long shot however It's good to hear he is ahead of schedule. It will be another must-win game to get to 2-3 and keep pace with the dirty birds.

All decent news. I'm wondering about Rankins and his progress. It'd be great to get some depth and, assuming a good recovery, superior talent on the field.

This isn't flame-baiting, this is a legitimate question --

Has there ever been an injured player under Payton that has returned ahead of originally scheduled and not weeks after?

I seem to recall Keenan Lewis rushing back last year but usually if Payton says six weeks, it's ten. If he says week to week, they are clinically dead and being carted around practice Weekend at Bernie's style.

I'm hopeful Breaux gets back soon, but I just feel like it's going to be one of those things like Byrd was where he's "a week away" for months.

Considering he's a 1st rounder, Young, and showed flashes in TC of being a premier player I'd assume they wanted to be VERY VERY careful with his injury and not rush him back until he was 100%

He's likely on schedule if not ahead (though the potential for the injury to take longer to come back from is there because he's 300+ DT vs a CB who is 200)

I'd def have no problem waiting the full 8-10 weeks.

Ellerbe is gonna come back for the Carolina game and play the whole time. Probably looks good and plays well. Then, all of a sudden, he'll have another phantom injury that just pops up and be out for another 2 weeks. It's bound to happen.

So how does Breaux return sooner than Rankins? They both had the same injury right? Rankins has had almost 9 weeks to recover. He should be a go vs Carolina before Breaux.
Rankins is 300lbs and Breaux is 200. The weight difference likely plays a bigger part. Rankins also had the same injury in the opposite leg in HS. I'd be very careful with our 13th pick.

IIRC, Breaux is not on IR, so he can return whenever.

Rankins went to IR, so there is a specific timetable in which he is allowed to return.

I think there is a good chance Breaux comes back in week 6. There are videos of him walking and running just fine on Facebook. I think with the next two weeks to prepare he may be able to return.

At this point I no longer factor Ellerbe in. It would be nice to see some time, but he's hardly played in the last three seasons.

You would think that law of averages would kick in but he just seems to be made of glass. And not getting younger at this point. Unless he can finish out this season strong would only bring him back a very friendly deal with bias to releasing to make way on the roster for a future prospect.

Exactly to what extent were Breaux and Rankins' injuries? I know Rankins got rolled up on. So, just guessing, his was either a near or complete fracture. What happened to Breaux? Just know it's the same bone. But maybe Breaux's bone was just hairline or maybe a partial fracture.

No matter. The main difference between Breaux and Rankins aside from their size is Rankins' legs will need withstand FAR more pressure. He'll be bearing his own weight plus whatever force the offensive lineman is exerting on him.

Breaux will only get that from the occasional running play, briefly when he's jamming a WR, and making a tackle. But his bones won't get nearly the same stress.

Rankins is on IR and can't return for a minimum of 6 weeks.

Now, teams can simply choose a player who’s been on injured reserve for at least six weeks and activate him once he’s healthy enough to play again.
which is slightly different then the old rule of 6 weeks inactive, 2 weeks practice time
Under the old rule, the player with the IR-return designation was out at least six weeks before returning to practice and eight before he could return to game action.
Rule change could add strategy to bringing a player back from IR | ProFootballTalk

Also, DTs use their legs for leverage a lot more, so theyre putting even more pressure on it.
