Denmark introduces John Dillermand to kids TV (1 Viewer)

I think we are mostly the ones responsible for the double standard you were talking about. Historically, males in general are find with showing boobs, scantily clad women, and naked women, but no so much okay with scantily clad or naked men.

Bingo. I didn't think it was hard to understand. And it's obvious. American society is shaded by these undertones. It's not wrong or right. It is what it is. So I'm not shocked by outrage at this while completely embracing things other countries find horrific. Our moral compasses have been set to ignore what has become totally acceptable parts of American society.

Being the prudish, self-righteous ******** that we are, we say things like, "look at the sexually explicit stuff, they're showing their kids! Oh my Gawd! (meanwhile Sunday's game will feature more boobs than touchdowns)

I wish we weren't so prudish here about nudity. But imbuing a sexual organ with powers to "save" children is something different than not being ashamed of our naked bodies and, frankly, sounds right out of the NAMBLA playbook.

I understand that & don't really disagree, but what does that have to do with being white?

I think American society would look different if it was created to cater Asian women. Just a hunch.

I mean, it's historically true that white people, specifically white men, have basically been in control of much of the media in this country through it's history, including newspapers, radio, TV, film studios, etc. And they have more or less been in control of the government, including the FCC which sets "decency" rules for broadcasts and the Federal Courts which decide what is indecent and/or pornography, so I think a pretty good argument could be made that any attitudes or actions regarding sexuality have historically been based on the opinions of white dudes in that regard. Of course, I doubt that the attitudes toward the double standard would be much different had black dudes gotten to make those rules (or any other male ethnic group for that matter), but the fact is that they didn't get to make those rules and white dudes did.

On the other hand, it would be much different if women made those decisions regardless of their race or culture.

I mean, I can't say that I totally disagree with that opinion from my personal point of view. But, despite the fact that I don't subscribe to Judeo-Christian ethics, I am a product of American culture which tends to be very conservative in regard to sexuality and nudity. So, I have to at least consider the possibility that I'm just being overly "prudish" and the Danes are on the right side of this. From what I know about Denmark, there are a lot of good things that can be said about their culture and the quality of life there.

I think you want something that would have to start with us not being so prudish about our bodies. Shooting lightning bolts out of your hand is fine for a cartoon superhero if you haven't been conditioned to think that hands were created purely for masturbation. How about changing the way we think about penises just being sexual.

Here's something else to consider. For the past 10-15 years, women have been trying to normalize breastfeeding babies in public in the US. Nothing sexual about feeding your child but women would get threatened or harassed for doing it. That's uptight and prudish. Needing to feed your child but having to wait because of how our society views/viewed it.

American society, and most societies in general, are created to cater majorly to MEN, period. or do you not think that a beer commercial with a half-naked woman doesn't have Asian/black/hispanic men in mind at all?

I'll say this about american media these days. I think you're just as likely to see half naked guys or sexually provocative guys as you would girls. I just don't think that we see a guy running around with tight shorts and no shirt as being provocative or exploitative.the way we do with women.

I thought of this old SNL skit when talking about what we show in beer commercials. I think it kind of illustrates that while we are a little more open to male sexuality and nudity, we have not really reached the point where we would see this on TV in the U.S. I mean, even a Ritz commercial involving fully clothed gay men caused a lot of uproar very recently.

The bolded is precisely the point I was making and I think that if you look at other non-white cultures that exist today then you would see this to be true. It's true that cultural acceptance would be different, such as Denmark vs America, but that has nothing at all to do with race.

You just can't lump this all together, though.

I don't object to this cartoon existing -- I may think it's funny, I dunno -- but that it's specifically being made for children. Maybe I'm wrong. But, again, it's really nothing to do with the idea of public nudity.

I think it has more to do with culture and the predominant religion in the location more than anything else.

Yes, it's become oppression. When we fail to exercise prudence regarding children, however, I call it bad parenting.

The thing is that "prudence" is very subjective and involves all kinds of attitudes that we learn from our own culture. Sure, there are things that are objectively "bad", but the vast majority of things exist in a grey area that depends on what you were taught or experienced while growing up. I tend to think attitudes toward nudity and sexuality are things that fall into the grey area. Cultures such as those of the Greeks and the Romans had very different attitudes toward nudity and sexualtiy than cultures now based on Judeo-Christian and Islamic morality. And, in many ways, those attitudes toward sexulity and nudity were used, and are still used, to oppress women in those cultures.
