Deonte Harris (1 Viewer)

I’m loving what we’re seeing from Harris, and right now I think he makes it. I could see them IR’ing Sherels if he can’t get back on the field.

I also want to temper our excitement a little, though. One muff by Harris and half of us are going to be ready to jump ship and will be wondering why we got rid of an established return specialist for a Div 2 rookie. It may be that coaches know what they have in Sherels, I haven’t read exactly why he isn’t playing. But to circle back around, Harris looks great and I’m ready to trust him with the position. I just want us to understand there may be growing pains involved.

Harris is highly skilled and smooth as butter, and not at all intimidated by the big stage. Payton will have to like him a lot to put him on the 53, because he's 1 dimensional. The Saints could have a 5'6" scat back and/or WR in their future.

We signed Sherels and Harris this offseason to come in and compete to be our return specialist. We pretty much know what Sherels is. He's got a long resume. He is a little past his prime but still a solid return man. Harris has a lot of upside, but no pro resume as a kick returner.

If Harris wasn't absolutely killing it out there, then Sherel's body of work would likely be enough to give him the job. But Harris is killing it, and Sherels isn't healthy and therefore isn't getting to go out and make his case.

At this point, Harris has a huge and growing lead to be our new RS.

He plays/played the Wide Receiver in college, I wouldn't say he is one dimensional and if/when he makes this 53 and starts making plays as a returner I could see the Saints working him in on offense as a gadget player/deep threat.

What about Sherrels ? He's no longer a consideration for punt returner?

It's a two man race. He started out as the clear favorite, but suffered some sort of injury. And that's left Deonte Harris getting almost all the pre-season punt and kick return reps. And not only has Harris been getting all the return snaps... He's he's doing it better than anybody on any team this preseason so far.

Still think it's a two man race, but honestly, I think Harris is winning at the moment.
