As far as BPA goes, after looking into the top prospects in the class at every position, Derek Barnett is my 2nd favorite player in this class. Only Myles Garrett impresses me more.. This guy checks the height, weight, speed triangle and has the production to match. I watched clips in rapid succession of Barnett against Cam Robinson (the #1 OT in the class) and he wins about 80% of the battles. This 2016 draft is incredibly top heavy at DE, but the good ones are scary good. This could end up another 2011. If Garrett is Von Miller, I think Barnett could be Wattesque.

Losing these next two wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if it meant our chances to grab this dude increase.

I agree, I am not saying lose on purpose because aside from the Bucs tanking for Winston I don't think pros would ever do that. I really want us to get a top notch edge player in this draft.

I have been doing a lot of research on Barnett, i wouldnt go as far as calling him a dream pick, I would call him a safe pick. While he checks off the boxes mentioned the two things that may hold him back at the next level is that he lacks ideal length and that quick first step.

I think as a rookie he will give a team 6-8 sacks but will probably cap out at 8-10 per year after that. He is also a bit of a polarizing player as far as draft value goes. I've seen him as high as 6 and as low as 19th in mock drafts.

The combine wil be very important to Barnett mire than Garrett who is a consensus top pick. If Barnett measures out good in arm length and explosiveness he will go top ten. He will definitely be one to follow at the combine to see where his draft stock solidifies.

Even if we don't get Barnett, Carl Lawson isn't as polished but has a higher ceiling and Tim Williams are both players to consider.

On a side note would anyone be upset if we double dipped at DE in the draft? Barnett or Lawson in the 1st and Harold Landry in the 3rd?

I need to see more of Barnett, but does he have the speed and quickness to be an elite defensive end? My impression, based admittedly on limited information, is that he is relatively safe pick given the position but does not have a very high ceiling.

BArnett is good but Garrett will be special! If saints can get into 8-10 spot in draft they should call browns to trade up kid is worth it! What would it cost to move up from those spots?

You'd be right. One thing this D is missing is smart players and he's that. He doesn't get caught rushing up field and he notices when he's being blocked a particular way or being attacked. He makes plays in the run game and despite not having the high upside of an elite burst he studies the game and times snaps very well and has the bend of a smaller guy.

He sure put Cam Robinson on skates a lot. Now maybe Robinson is raw and isn't the greatest prospect yet but it shows you just how High barnetts floor is and I don't think we need a star there.

We do need someone steady and thoughbwebdrafted Kikaha in the 2nd two years ago his knee issues are too substantial not to pad that position and add better talent.

Barnett seems more of a Cam Jordan type. Good against the run, good at setting the edge, and good at rushing the passer. That makes him a 3 down DE, and that's what we need. I still think Kikaha may be our answer at speed rusher, but he doesn't need to be on the field on running downs or ever drop into coverage again.

Pass rush specialist is probably the perfect role for Kikaha. He's on the smallish size for setting the edge and also it reduces the risk of another knee injury.

Picking Barnett would not bother me in the slightest. He's a damn good football player, and would fill a glaring need.

There is only 2 players I want in the 1st round and thats Derek Barnett and Zach Cunningham. I hit on Emmaunel Ogbah last year when i was preaching till i was blue in te face that we should draft him and the board red thumbed me to death. Browns as bad as they are hit with him and if he was here would have about 6 sacks now.

Garrett disappeared against top SEC teams, while Barnett dominated SEC O-lines for three years. Garrett does have a higher ceiling and is the better physical specimen, but Barnett is a blue-collar player that consistently gets the job done. He's much better at setting the edge than Garrett as well. Barnett would be a perfect fit for our D-line and would give us one of the best D-lines in the league.

You weren't the only one, I promise. I loved Ogbah as a DE prospect. He was my number 1 player I wanted in the 2016 draft as well. I have zero issues with Rankins though, a potential dominant interior player like Rankins can go a long way in making a defense great. Love Rankins and Fairley and the other DT's the Saints have right now.

I also love Barnett as a DE prospect because like others have pointed out, he's equally effective against the run and the pass. He's got plenty of size and plays with great leverage against the run. You're looking at an every down DE in the NFL with potential to be one of the top ends in the league.
