Can the Eagles' "Fire Zone" scheme put pressure on Drew Brees?
The last time Philadelphia came to New Orleans a few months ago, the team lost by three points, 27-24. The Eagles' "Fire Zone" blitz scheme did not create one sack. The Eagles did go through a period when they were trying to pressure the QB with front four pressure. In the earlier game, the Eagles got four hits on Brees, and all four of them came from defensive linemen. Even though CB Lito Sheppard will not play and the secondary will need help, I expect Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson to bring his famous scheme often. Since the Eagles went on that three-game road schedule against division opponents to end the season, the secondary has come alive in the pressure game. In the last five games, defensive backs have five hits and three sacks on quarterbacks. The Eagles are hot because of Brian Westbrook, Jeff Garcia and the pressure defense. The Eagles get a few sacks in this one as Johnson schemes a few pressure looks for Brees in his game-plan meeting.
I read this short passage on NFL.com and I have heard this same game plan from several other sources. I seem to remember a few other teams trying to overload the "J-line" with pressure to get to Brees and having screens and swing passes open all day. If this is, indeed, the game plan of Jim Johnson, look for Reggie and Deuce to start off hot in the short passing game.
